Mangave 'Bad Hair Day' is a striking hybrid succulent created by crossing Manfreda and Agave. It forms a rosette of long, narrow, arching leaves that twist and curl in all directions giving it a wild, messy hair appearance. The foliage is typically green to silvery with dramatic purple spotting, adding texture and movement to any plant collection.
Mangaves are cultivated hybrids developed in the United States, combining the resilience of Agave (native to Mexico and the southwestern U.S.) with the faster growth and softer leaves of Manfreda (native to North America). 'Bad Hair Day' is part of a modern breeding series designed for ornamental gardening.
Produces a tall flower spike when mature. Flowers are tubular and greenish to creamy-white, sometimes with a slight fragrance. Blooming is relatively rare in container-grown plants. Like agaves, the plant may decline after flowering, but often produces offsets beforehand.
Distinctive curly, twisting leaves resembling unruly hair. Eye-catching purple spotting across the foliage. Combines agave toughness with faster growth. More flexible and softer leaves than traditional agaves (less sharp). Excellent for containers, xeriscaping, and modern landscapes.
Full sun to bright indirect light. Best color and compact form in strong light. Can tolerate partial shade, but may stretch slightly.
Water moderately but infrequently. Allow soil to dry out completely between watering. More tolerant of occasional watering than agaves.
Requires well-draining soil. Use a cactus/succulent mix with added perlite or sand. Avoid heavy or moisture-retaining soils.
Thrives in 15°C - 32°C (60°F - 90°F). Tolerates brief cold but protect from hard freezes below -3°C (27°F).
Moderate to fast-growing compared to agaves. Can reach 12-18 inches wide in a few seasons.
USDA Zones 9-11. Protect from prolonged frost and freezing temperatures.

Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered
light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do
NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour
off any excess water after a few minutes.
The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot
area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended
periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
