  •   Gasteria bicolor f. caespitosa is a clumping succulent native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it grows in rocky, shaded outcrops beneath shrubs and cliff overhangs. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae and produces tight offsets that build into dense clusters over time.

The leaves are thick and tongue-shaped, dark green with pale green to white speckled banding across the surface in a pattern that resembles reptile scales. Each leaf has a slightly rough, bumpy texture and a rounded tip. Gasteria Caespitosa forms a compact, low rosette, and as it offsets, it gradually expands into a multi-headed cluster without spreading wide.

It produces tubular, stomach-shaped flowers on arching stems, typically in shades of coral-pink to orange-red, appearing in late winter to spring. Gasteria Caespitosa flowers without a dramatic temperature shift requirement, though a slight night temperature drop in autumn can encourage more consistent blooming. The flowers are not fragrant.

You can leave it up to ten days without water, which covers extended absences without intervention. Move it outside for summer in a shaded or dappled spot, and bring it back in before autumn frost arrives. Keep it away from rain exposure outdoors, as sitting water in the rosette can cause rot. Gasteria Caespitosa develops deep roots and performs best in a heavy pot with good drainage to prevent tipping. This plant is pet friendly.

  •   Gasteria bicolor f. caespitosa grows well under office fluorescent or LED lighting and in bright indirect light near east or north-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days in spring and summer, and reduce to once a month in winter, letting the soil dry fully between waterings.

Gasteria Caespitosa does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix combined with coarse perlite or pumice at a 50/50 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 85°F and is sensitive to hot or cold air blown directly from AC vents or heaters.

Gasteria Caespitosa is a slow-growing succulent; feed it once in spring and once in summer with a diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and coastal areas of Georgia and South Carolina. It can stay outdoors through autumn in zone 8 with protection from hard frost.
  • Q: Does Gasteria bicolor f. caespitosa do well in a south-facing window?
A: It scorches in direct south-facing sun. An east or north-facing window, or a spot a few feet back from a bright window, works better.

Q: Is this succulent safe to keep around cats and dogs?
A: Gasteria bicolor f. caespitosa is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I propagate Gasteria Caespitosa?
A: Separate the offsets that form around the base of the mother plant during spring or summer. Let the cut end callous for a day before potting into dry succulent mix.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow?
A: Gasteria Caespitosa is likely being overwatered. Yellow, soft leaves usually mean the roots have sat in moisture too long, and the plant may need repotting into fresh dry mix.

Q: Can Gasteria Caespitosa handle the air near an air conditioner or heater?
A: It is sensitive to air blown directly from vents, whether hot or cold. Move it away from the direct airflow path, though it can tolerate dry heated room air without trouble.

Q: How big does this plant get, and does it need rotating?
A: Gasteria Caespitosa stays compact, typically reaching 4-6 inches tall in a rosette cluster. Rotating the pot a quarter turn every few weeks helps it grow evenly toward the light source.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
