  •   Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion', also called Medallion Prayer Plant, is a tropical foliage plant native to the rainforests of Brazil and belongs to the Marantaceae family. It grows naturally on the shaded forest floor, where filtered light and high humidity define its environment.

The leaves are large, broadly oval, and can reach up to 12 inches long. Each leaf surface features a deep green base with a feathered, rose-to-cream pattern radiating from the center midrib, and the undersides are a solid burgundy-red. 'Medallion' grows in an upright, clumping rosette form, with each new leaf unfurling from the center.

Indoors, 'Medallion' rarely flowers, and when it does, the blooms are small and inconspicuous compared to the foliage. It is fully pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves fold upward in the evening and open again in the morning, a movement driven by changes in light.

Rotate 'Medallion' every few weeks so all sides receive even light exposure. It thrives near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays higher, and it also does well inside a terrarium where humidity is naturally enclosed. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as direct airflow from either dries the air around the leaves. This calathea purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins, and its transpiration process naturally adds moisture to the surrounding air.

  •   Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' thrives in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

Water it every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Medallion' does best in a well-draining, peat-based mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and suffers below 60°F.

'Medallion' is a moderate grower; feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11, where outdoor temperatures stay above 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and parts of Texas and Louisiana. In cooler states, it thrives as a permanent indoor plant.
  • Q: How much humidity does Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' need?
A: It prefers humidity levels above 50%. A pebble tray with water, a humidifier nearby, or placement in a kitchen or bathroom all help maintain that level consistently.

Q: What happens if this plant is overwatered?
A: Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' will develop yellowing leaves and soggy stems when overwatered. Root rot follows quickly in soil that stays wet too long without proper drainage.

Q: Why are 'Medallion's' leaf tips turning brown?
A: Brown tips are almost always caused by dry air, fluoride in tap water, or cold drafts. Switching to filtered or distilled water and moving it away from vents usually stops further browning.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: 'Medallion' is non-toxic and pet-friendly. It is listed as safe for both cats and dogs by the ASPCA.

Q: How do I know when Medallion Prayer Plant needs water?
A: The leaves wilt slightly and curl inward when the soil has dried out. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering.

Q: Can Medallion Prayer Plant handle being moved to a new spot?
A: It is sensitive to being moved and may drop leaves or show stress after a location change. Once you find a stable spot with consistent indirect light and humidity, keep it there.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
