  •   Stapelia Gigantea, also called Starfish Flower, is a rare drought-tolerant succulent native to the grasslands and rocky slopes of southern and eastern Africa. Despite its common name, it belongs to the genus Stapelia in the Apocynaceae family, not true cacti, though it shares the same bold, sculptural appeal. It grows well in hot, dry conditions with excellent drainage and has no leaves, just geometric stems that handle all photosynthetic work.

The stems are velvety to the touch and can reach impressive heights, giving this succulent a substantial presence in any indoor collection. It grows upright and clumping, developing multiple stems that build a substantial form over time. Growth is moderate and steady, making it a plant that develops character without outpacing its space.

It produces some of the largest star-shaped blooms in the plant kingdom, with flowers stretching up to 12 to 14 inches across in pale yellow adorned with burgundy-red banding and fine hair-like cilia along the edges. Blooms appear in late summer to autumn, and a night temperature drop triggers flowering. The flowers carry a carrion-like scent designed to attract fly pollinators.

Rotate the pot regularly for even growth on all sides. Move it outside in summer where it experiences natural temperature swings to encourage blooming. Keep Stapelia Gigantea on a high shelf or out of reach, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Stapelia Gigantea Cactus grows well in bright indirect light or partial sun and may scorch in harsh south-facing afternoon windows.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter, letting the soil dry completely between waterings.

Stapelia Gigantea does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 90°F and must be protected from frost below 50°F.

Stapelia Gigantea is a moderate grower that benefits from diluted succulent fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips but requiring protection from any frost below 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Coastal areas of Oregon, Washington, and Virginia also fall within range for outdoor cultivation.
  • Q: How often should I water Stapelia Gigantea Cactus?
A: Every 10 to 14 days during summer. Slight stem wrinkling indicates when water is needed. Cut back to once monthly in winter.

Q: Is the sap toxic to pets?
A: Stapelia Gigantea Cactus sap causes skin and paw irritation in cats and dogs. Place it on a high shelf out of reach.

Q: What window direction works best for Stapelia Gigantea?
A: Bright indirect light from an east or west-facing window works well. North-facing windows provide sufficient light too. Avoid prolonged afternoon sun through south-facing glass, which scorches the stems.

Q: How do I encourage blooming?
A: Stapelia Gigantea flowers when night temperatures drop in late summer or early autumn. Moving it outside in summer where natural temperature swings occur works effectively.

Q: Can Starfish Flower survive a trip without watering?
A: It can last up to ten days without water. Ensure it has good light and is not sitting in moisture before you leave.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent?
A: Starfish Flower propagates readily from offsets or stem cuttings. Allow the separated pieces to callous for a day or two before planting in dry succulent mix.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
