  •   Espostoa lanata, also called Old Man Cactus, is a columnar cactus native to the high-altitude slopes of Peru and Ecuador, where it grows in rocky, arid terrain with intense sun and minimal rainfall. A member of the Cactaceae family, this slow-growing cactus has earned a devoted following among collectors and beginners alike for its unforgettable appearance.

The plant is recognizable by its dense coat of silky white wool that wraps the entire column from base to tip, giving it that iconic "old man" look. Beneath the fluffy white fibers lie sharp spines that provide protection, while the upright columnar form grows tall and narrow. Espostoa lanata makes a natural focal point on any sunny windowsill or patio.

Mature specimens produce nocturnal flowers that emerge from a specialized woolly section called the cephalium, typically blooming in shades of white to pale pink. Blooms appear on older, well-established plants and benefit from a night temperature drop. The plant also releases oxygen at night.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer in a sunny, sheltered spot; just protect it from rain and bring it back inside before temperatures drop near freezing. In frost-free climates it can stay outside into autumn with no trouble. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though its spines mean it should be placed on a high shelf, away from small children. Whether you are building a desert-themed indoor display or a sun-drenched patio garden, this slow-growing cactus brings character to any collection.

  •   Peruvian Old Man Cactus - Espostoa lanata grows in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, and benefits from rotating regularly for even upright growth.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in spring and summer, and reduce to once a month or less in fall and winter.

Espostoa lanata does best in a fast-draining cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50-90°F and is sensitive to frost below 25°F.

Espostoa lanata is a slow-growing cactus that needs only a light balanced fertilizer once or twice during the active spring and summer season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but preferring frost-free conditions year-round. It grows outdoors in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, as well as coastal areas of Oregon and parts of New Mexico and Arkansas that reach into zone 9. This drought-tolerant columnar cactus performs across the warmer Sun Belt states.
  • Q: How often should I water Peruvian Old Man Cactus - Espostoa lanata?
A: Water deeply every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer when the soil dries out completely, then cut back to once monthly in fall and winter to prevent root rot.

Q: Can I keep this plant in a bedroom?
A: Peruvian Old Man Cactus - Espostoa lanata produces oxygen at night, making it a suitable companion for bedside placement, though brighter windows will encourage stronger upright growth.

Q: Can Espostoa lanata survive without water during a vacation?
A: Yes, it can survive 7-10 days without water since it stores moisture in its columnar structure and requires very little hydration during cooler months.

Q: Is this plant safe for pets?
A: Espostoa lanata is non-toxic to cats and dogs, but place it on a high shelf since the spines are sharp and can injure curious animals.

Q: How fast does Old Man Cactus grow?
A: It gains just a few inches per year under ideal conditions, so patience is part of owning this slow-growing cactus.

Q: Can I propagate this plant at home?
A: Old Man Cactus is propagated through stem cuttings taken in spring or summer. Allow the cut end to callous for several days before planting in dry cactus mix, then water sparingly until roots establish.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
