  •   Ferocactus Hamatacanthus Cactus is a drought tolerant barrel cactus native to the Chihuahuan Desert regions of Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. It grows in rocky limestone soils and open desert scrubland, making it a naturally tough and adaptable species for low-water gardens.

It grows in an upright barrel shape, typically reaching 12 to 24 inches tall, with deeply ribbed green stems. The hooked spines are reddish-brown and long, curving inward along each rib like fishhooks that give the desert cactus plant its memorable name.

Yellow flowers bloom from the crown during summer, followed by small edible red fruit. A cool night temperature drop helps encourage blooming.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer on a sunny patio or balcony, but keep it covered from heavy rain and bring it inside before hard frost arrives. The spines are sharp, so place it on a high shelf away from small children and curious pets. It is cat and dog friendly despite its fierce appearance.

  •   Ferocactus Hamatacanthus Cactus grows well in full, direct sun for at least six hours daily indoors or out.

Water it deeply every two to three weeks in summer, cutting back to once monthly in winter, letting the soil dry completely between waterings.

Ferocactus Hamatacanthus does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 95 degrees and tolerates brief dips to around 20 degrees when kept dry.

Ferocactus Hamatacanthus is a slow grower requiring only light balanced cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 8 through 11, tolerating short cold snaps down to around 20 degrees when soil stays dry. It grows outdoors year-round in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. It also succeeds in coastal Oregon and sheltered spots in Arkansas, North Carolina, and parts of the Pacific Northwest where zone 8 conditions allow outdoor cultivation with well-drained soil.
  • Q: How often should I water Ferocactus Hamatacanthus Cactus?
A: Every two to three weeks during summer, once a month in winter. Let the soil dry completely between waterings. Wilting indicates the plant needs water.

Q: Is this plant safe around pets?
A: Ferocactus Hamatacanthus Cactus is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the sharp spines require it to be placed on a high shelf away from curious animals and small children.

Q: How much light does Ferocactus Hamatacanthus need?
A: A south-facing window indoors or an outdoor patio in full sun provides the brightest conditions, with at least six hours of direct light daily being ideal.

Q: How big does it get?
A: Ferocactus Hamatacanthus grows into an upright barrel shape typically reaching 12 to 24 inches tall over many years, making it manageable yet impressive for both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Q: Can Ferocactus Hamatacanthus survive a trip without watering?
A: Yes, you can leave it alone for up to ten days without water.

Q: Does it produce edible fruit?
A: Ferocactus Hamatacanthus produces summer blooms followed by small edible red fruit, with a long history of culinary and medicinal use in its native desert regions.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
