  •   Mistletoe Cactus (Rhipsalis baccifera) is a trailing epiphytic cactus native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Unlike desert cacti, it grows naturally anchored to tree branches in warm, humid forest shade, making it a true jungle cactus suited to indoor life.

The plant produces long, slender, cylindrical stems that cascade in dense, spaghetti-like strands, which is why it is sometimes called chain cactus or spaghetti cactus. The stems are bright to deep green, smooth, and segmented, with a soft texture that sets it apart from spiny desert varieties. Over time, it clusters and fills out, creating a dense, waterfall effect in hanging baskets or on shelves.

Mistletoe Cactus produces small, pale cream to white flowers along its stems, typically appearing in winter or early spring after night temperatures drop. The flowers are subtle rather than showy, but they give way to tiny, translucent white berries that resemble mistletoe berries, which inspired the plant's common name. To encourage blooming, provide cooler nights and reduce watering slightly in late autumn.

This trailing cactus does well near kitchen or bathroom windows where moisture and humidity stay naturally high, and it works well in terrariums with consistent humidity. It is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it filters indoor air by removing formaldehyde and other toxins. You can propagate it easily from stem cuttings by allowing them to callous for a day or two, then placing them in moist cactus mix in bright indirect light until roots develop.

  •   Mistletoe Cactus grows well in medium light or bright indirect light and performs under office LED bulbs, but scorches in direct south-facing sun.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during spring and summer, then reduce to once every three to four weeks in winter.

Mistletoe Cactus does best in well-draining cactus soil blended with orchid bark or perlite to mimic its natural epiphytic roots.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 80°F and should stay away from cold AC vents and heating units that blast dry air.

Mistletoe Cactus is a moderate grower that gradually produces long trailing stems over time; feed with half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer once monthly in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, tolerating brief dips no lower than around 35°F before cold damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and frost-rare pockets of southern California, southern Texas, and southern Arizona. It also does well in warmer Gulf Coast microclimates in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, coastal Georgia, and coastal South Carolina; gardeners in cooler zones should bring it indoors before autumn temperatures drop.
  • Q: Is Mistletoe Cactus pet-friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What do the stems look like?
A: Mistletoe Cactus has long, slender, segmented cylindrical stems that are bright to deep green with a smooth, soft texture.

Q: How fast does Mistletoe Cactus grow?
A: It grows at a moderate pace, gradually producing longer trailing stems over several months; rotate the pot regularly to encourage even, full growth.

    Q: Can it be propagated?
A: It propagates readily from stem cuttings; allow each cutting to callous for one to two days, then place it in moist cactus mix in bright indirect light. Roots typically develop within two to three weeks.

Q: Where should I place Mistletoe Cactus indoors?
A: Position it near north or east-facing windows for indirect light; avoid direct south-facing sun, which causes stem scorching.

Q: What window direction causes scorching?
A: South-facing windows with unfiltered direct sun scorch the stems. Mistletoe Cactus does better near north or east-facing windows for indirect light.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
