  •   Sempervivum 'Purple Passion' is a cold hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain ranges of Europe and Asia Minor where it grows across rocky, well-drained terrain. This hens and chicks succulent has been cultivated for centuries, valued for its ability to grow in harsh alpine conditions with minimal care.

'Purple Passion' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in deep purples and burgundy-green, with fleshy pointed leaves that intensify in color under bright sun. Individual rosettes typically reach 2 to 4 inches across, and the plant clusters freely as daughter rosettes push outward from the mother plant, creating a dense carpet over time. It spreads at a moderate pace and works equally well in small pots or tumbling across rock gardens.

Like other Sempervivum, 'Purple Passion' blooms once per rosette, typically in summer, producing tall star-shaped flower clusters before that rosette completes its life cycle. The surrounding chicks continue growing, keeping the colony full without interruption.

Move it outside in summer to deepen color intensity. It handles drafty outdoor spots well and spreads without becoming invasive, fitting equally into rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, and outdoor borders. 'Purple Passion' is pet friendly, so you can display it anywhere without concern. Propagating it is straightforward: gently twist off a chick rosette and set it on well-draining soil, where it roots within a few weeks on its own.

  •   Sempervivum 'Purple Passion' grows well in partial to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily for the best color.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days.

'Purple Passion' does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand to prevent root rot.

It tolerates temperatures down to about -30°F, making it one of the toughest frost-tolerant succulents available.

'Purple Passion' is a slow to moderate grower that rarely needs fertilizer, though a diluted balanced feed once in spring provides a gentle boost.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8. It grows outdoors year-round across Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Wyoming, Idaho, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. It also thrives in much of Washington and Oregon, as well as Utah, Nevada's higher elevations, northern California, northern Arizona, and New Mexico.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Purple Passion' safe around cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: How quickly does the plant spread?
A: Sempervivum 'Purple Passion' clusters at a moderate pace, filling in gradually without becoming invasive, eventually spreading across a foot or more over time.

Q: Can 'Purple Passion' handle rain and outdoor exposure?
A: It handles windy outdoor spots well but benefits from cover during prolonged heavy rain. Soggy soil causes root rot. It performs well on sheltered balconies or under eaves.

Q: What is the simplest way to start new plants?
A: 'Purple Passion' propagates easily. Gently twist off a chick rosette from the mother plant and set it on well-draining soil; it roots within a few weeks with no additional care.

Q: How large do individual rosettes of 'Purple Passion' get?
A: Individual rosettes typically reach 2 to 4 inches across, staying compact and low while the clustering colony spreads wider over time.

    Q: Does overwatering cause problems?
A: Yes. Overwatering leads to root rot. Let soil dry completely between waterings and use a well-draining mix to prevent moisture buildup.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
