  •   Sempervivum 'Nocturno' is a frost-hardy succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountain regions of Europe and Asia Minor. It evolved in rocky, exposed terrain where it grows with minimal soil and harsh weather conditions.

Nocturno forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in deep burgundy to near-black tones. The thick, fleshy leaves taper to neat points and cluster together over time, creating a spreading mat of offsets that fills in slowly around the original plant. The leaf color intensifies in full sun, deepening from burgundy toward black.

Like other Sempervivum species, it is monocarpic, meaning each individual rosette flowers once and then makes way for surrounding offsets to continue the plant. One of its most notable traits is genuine frost tolerance, withstanding cold snaps that would finish off most other succulents. It handles balcony wind and rain without trouble, staying healthy in exposed outdoor locations.

Move it outside for summer and it can stay outdoors well into autumn and even winter in most climates. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Nocturno wilts slightly when thirsty. It works in rock gardens, container arrangements, green roofs, and sunny windowsills. It tolerates dry heated indoor air, drafty spots near windows or doors, and survives outdoor conditions in numerous regions across the United States. Cats and dogs can be around it safely.

  •   Sempervivum 'Nocturno' grows well in partial sun to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily for best color.

Water it every two to three weeks during the growing season, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to once a month or less.

Nocturno grows well in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with coarse perlite or pumice.

It handles temperatures from around 90°F down to -30°F, making it a genuinely frost-hardy succulent for cold climates.

Nocturno is a slow to moderate grower that needs little to no fertilizer, doing well without regular feeding.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, surviving temperatures well below 0°F. It grows outdoors in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and large parts of California and Texas.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Nocturno' pet friendly?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How should soil be prepared for planting?
A: Sempervivum 'Nocturno' needs a gritty, fast-draining mix; standard potting soil holds too much moisture and causes rot.

Q: Will Nocturno's color stay dark indoors?
A: The burgundy-to-black tones intensify in full sun; indoors with less light, it shifts toward green or lighter burgundy.

    Q: How does propagation work?
A: Nocturno naturally produces small offsets called chicks that cluster around the mother rosette and can be gently separated and replanted.

Q: How large does Nocturno get?
A: Individual rosettes typically reach two to four inches across, spreading slowly as new offsets fill in around the original plant to form a dense mat.

Q: Can it survive extended trips without water?
A: It can go up to ten days without watering. Nocturno will wilt slightly when the soil is completely dry.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
