  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Tan' is a rare cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of Central and Southeastern Europe. This alpine succulent has adapted to rocky, well-drained slopes and harsh alpine conditions, bringing that same rugged appeal to gardens and windowsills across a wide range of climates.

Tan forms tight, symmetrical rosettes in warm tawny and earthy tan tones that shift with the seasons. The leaves are fleshy and slightly pointed, arranged in a geometric pattern that gives each rosette a jewel-like appearance. It clusters over time, producing offsets that fill a pot or garden bed with variety.

Star-shaped flowers bloom on upright stalks in soft yellow tones, typically appearing in summer. Like all Sempervivum, Tan needs a temperature drop at night to trigger blooming, and the rosette that flowers will complete its life cycle afterward while the surrounding offsets continue growing.

Tan grows in full sun for outdoor containers, rock gardens, balcony pots, and alpine beds, handling balcony wind and rain with resilience. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer where it grows well in direct light. It is pet friendly and safe around cats and dogs. It survives as low as -30°F outdoors year-round across much of the United States.

  •   Sempervivum heuffelii 'Tan' grows well in partial sun to full sun, ideally receiving at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days.

Tan does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures from around -30°F in winter dormancy up to warm summer highs with ease.

Tan is a slow to moderate grower that needs no regular fertilizing, though a light spring feed can encourage healthy offsets.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Utah, and Nevada. It also thrives in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, and into the transition zones of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and northern Texas.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum heuffelii 'Tan' pet friendly?
A: It is safe to keep around cats, dogs, and other household animals.

Q: What is the best window placement for full sun growth indoors?
A: Sempervivum heuffelii 'Tan' needs a south-facing or west-facing windowsill where it receives direct light for most of the day, or move it outside to a balcony or garden bed for stronger, consistent sun exposure.

Q: How fast does Tan grow and when should I fertilize?
A: It grows slowly to moderately and needs no regular feeding; a light spring application supports new offset production.

Q: Can it really survive without water for extended periods?
A: Tan will show slight leaf wilting when thirsty; check soil moisture before watering to avoid overwatering during dormancy or cool months.

Q: How cold hardy is Tan in outdoor gardens?
A: It survives temperatures as low as -30°F in USDA zones 3 through 8.

    Q: How does propagation work?
A: Tan naturally produces offsets, or chicks, around the mother rosette that can be gently separated and replanted once they are large enough to handle.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
