  •   Sempervivum Calcareum is a hardy alpine succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the limestone mountains of the Alps in France and Italy. It evolved in rocky, nutrient-poor soils with excellent drainage. It spreads readily and tolerates frost, making it one of the most frost-hardy succulents available.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with blue-green leaves tipped in deep burgundy-red, and fine fringing along the leaf edges adds texture to the structure. It clusters freely as daughter offsets (called "chicks") root around the central rosette, creating a dense, spreading mat. Each rosette stays firm and geometric.

When it blooms in summer, a tall flower stalk emerges bearing star-shaped pink to reddish flowers. Since Sempervivum Calcareum is monocarpic, the rosette that flowers will die after setting seed, but the surrounding chicks continue growing without interruption. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

It works well in rock gardens, alpine troughs, container arrangements, and border edging. Move it outside in summer, or leave it outside year-round in cold climates. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs, so you can display it freely without concern. It handles drafty spots and tolerates dry heated air indoors.

  •   Sempervivum Calcareum grows well in partial sun to full sun, needing at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every ten to fourteen days.

Sempervivum Calcareum prefers a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with extra perlite or coarse grit.

It prefers temperatures around 65–80°F in summer and tolerates frost, handling winter lows down to -30°F.

Sempervivum Calcareum is a moderate to fast spreader that rarely needs fertilizer; a light feed in spring is sufficient.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 9, tolerating winter temperatures as low as -30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in the central and eastern United States, including Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. It also performs well in western and southern states such as Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Maryland.
  • Q: How often should I water Sempervivum Calcareum?
A: Water every ten to fourteen days, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings. In winter or during dormancy, reduce frequency to once monthly or less as growth slows.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Sempervivum Calcareum is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: Does Sempervivum Calcareum need a lot of light?
A: Place it in a south or west-facing window for maximum color development. Too little light causes looser rosettes and faded leaf color.

Q: What is the frost tolerance range?
A: Sempervivum Calcareum handles temperatures down to -30°F and is rated for USDA zones 4 through 9, staying outdoors through autumn and winter without protection in most climates.

Q: How does Sempervivum Calcareum spread?
A: Detach a rooted chick from the base cluster and pot it separately in well-draining soil; each will establish itself within a few weeks.

Q: What size does it reach?
A: Sempervivum Calcareum forms rosettes roughly 2 to 4 inches across. Mats expand outward as offsets mature, eventually reaching 12 inches or more depending on growing conditions and container size.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
