  •   Portulaca Molokiniensis is a rare Hawaiian native succulent from the Portulacaceae family, found on the rocky volcanic slopes of Molokini islet off Maui. It grows in some of the most arid and exposed conditions, making it a genuine collector plant for anyone drawn to rare and unusual succulents.

It grows in an upright, clustering habit, forming a compact sculptural mound. The leaves are fleshy, rounded, and stacked closely together in a dense, almost geometric pattern, with a bright green, waxy appearance that stays attractive year-round. A single plant gradually clusters and fills in, becoming a full specimen over time.

It produces small cheerful blooms typical of the Portulaca genus, adding seasonal color to its form. One of its most useful traits is that it shows you when it needs water through gentle wilting. Note that it does produce pollen and allergens, so it is worth knowing if you have sensitivities.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside in summer to soak up natural sun, but always shelter it from rain, as excess moisture causes rot. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats, dogs, and toddlers. Its rarity, upright clustering form, and Hawaiian origin make it a conversation piece in any succulent collection.

  •   Portulaca Molokiniensis grows well in partial sun to full sun, receiving several hours of direct sunlight daily.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings.

Portulaca Molokiniensis does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix amended with extra perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit and is not frost hardy.

Portulaca Molokiniensis is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer once monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, where temperatures rarely drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, Florida, Southern California, coastal and Southern Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and South Carolina. Warmer microclimates along Oregon's coast, the Rio Grande Valley, and similar mild-winter pockets across these regions also offer welcoming conditions for this rare Hawaiian succulent.
  • Q: How often should I water Portulaca Molokiniensis?
A: Every 10 to 14 days, letting the soil dry out completely. Check the soil with your finger; if it feels moist, wait a few more days before watering.

Q: Does this plant need bright light to stay compact?
A: Portulaca Molokiniensis benefits from rotation to encourage even growth on all sides. Several hours of direct sun daily keeps the foliage dense and green.

Q: Is Portulaca Molokiniensis safe around pets and children?
A: No. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats, dogs, and toddlers, as ingestion can be harmful.

Q: Can this succulent handle being left alone during trips?
A: Portulaca Molokiniensis tolerates up to ten days without water and maintains firm, plump leaves during this period.

Q: What conditions does Portulaca Molokiniensis need outdoors in summer?
A: Move it outside to soak up natural warmth and sun, but always provide shelter from rain to prevent rot.

Q: Is this a good plant for someone new to succulents?
A: Portulaca Molokiniensis is drought tolerant and signals when it needs water through gentle wilting.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
