  •   Plectranthus neochilus, also called Lobster Flower, is a drought-tolerant herb from the Lamiaceae family native to southern Africa. It grows naturally in rocky, dry habitats where low humidity and warm temperatures define the climate, and it adapts well to indoor life as a beginner plant that tolerates neglect.

The plant forms a compact, upright mound of thick, fleshy leaves in green with slightly scalloped edges and a velvety, waxy texture. When brushed or crushed, the foliage releases a strong, distinctive herbal scent that is one of its most recognizable features. Its narrow, upright growth habit makes it well-suited to smaller spaces, windowsills, and patio containers rather than spreading wide.

Plectranthus neochilus produces spikes of small violet-blue to lavender flowers that appear in late summer through autumn. The blooms attract pollinators when the plant is placed outdoors, though the plant does produce pollen and may not suit households with significant allergy concerns.

Move it outside in summer and it can remain on a patio or balcony into autumn in mild climates. The aromatic foliage has a long history of edible and medicinal use in its native range. It purifies indoor air and is non-toxic, making it safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Lobster Flower Plectranthus neochilus grows well in bright indirect light and can scorch if placed directly in a south-facing window.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the soil to dry between sessions; it survives drought periods and wilts slightly when thirsty.

Plectranthus neochilus does best in well-draining potting soil mixed with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 60-85°F and must be protected from frost below 32°F.

Plectranthus neochilus is a fast grower that benefits from light pruning and balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and tolerates brief dips no lower than 32°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and the coastal stretches of Oregon and Washington. It also grows well in southern Nevada valleys, lower elevations of New Mexico, and parts of North Carolina's coast with minimal winter protection.
  • Q: Is Lobster Flower Plectranthus neochilus safe to keep around pets?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: What window placement works best for growing indoors?
A: Lobster Flower Plectranthus neochilus does best in a bright spot away from direct south-facing sun, which can scorch the leaves; east or west windows work well with some afternoon shade.

Q: How fast does Plectranthus neochilus grow, and does it need feeding?
A: It grows quickly and responds well to balanced liquid fertilizer applied every 4-6 weeks during the growing season; light pruning keeps the shape compact and upright.

Q: Can I leave it unwatered while traveling?
A: Plectranthus neochilus can be left up to 10-14 days without water since it is highly drought-tolerant.

Q: Can Lobster Flower live outdoors year-round where I live?
A: It grows outdoors in USDA zones 9-11; if your region experiences freezing temperatures below 32°F, bring it indoors before winter or plan on brief frost protection.

Q: Does this plant handle the dry air of heated indoor spaces?
A: Lobster Flower tolerates low humidity well and can stay away from direct blasts of heating or cooling vents without trouble.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
