  •   Senecio Stapeliiformis, also called Candle Stick Plant, is a rare drought-tolerant succulent native to South Africa, where it grows in rocky, arid landscapes with sharp drainage and full sun exposure. Despite its common name referencing cactus, this genus member is a true succulent, making it a distinctive addition to any collection.

It grows in a bold upright form, producing pencil-like cylindrical stems striped in silvery gray and deep green with subtle purple patterning along the ridges. Small scale-like leaves cling tightly to the stems, giving the plant a textured quality. Its compact stem structure makes this rare succulent collectible.

Senecio Stapeliiformis produces red-orange brush-like flower heads at stem tips, typically appearing in warmer months when conditions align. A noticeable nighttime temperature drop encourages blooming, so placing it where natural temperature variation occurs during the growing season increases flowering chances.

Position it outdoors in a sheltered spot during summer, but cover it or move it indoors during heavy rain, as excess moisture invites rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It wilts visibly when thirsty. Rotate the pot regularly to maintain even upright growth. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of pets and small children, since the sap can irritate skin and paws.

  •   Candle Stick Plant - Senecio Stapeliiformis Stapeliiformis Cactus grows well in bright indirect light and may scorch in harsh south-facing windows.

Water it thoroughly every 10 to 14 days in summer, tapering to once monthly in winter.

Senecio Stapeliiformis does best in gritty, fast-draining cactus and perlite mix that prevents standing moisture.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85°F and should be protected from frost or freezing conditions.

Senecio Stapeliiformis is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer applied monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, where temperatures rarely dip below 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, and the mild coastal stretches of Oregon. Collectors in other states can grow it indoors, moving it outside to soak up warm summer weather before temperatures drop.
  • Q: How often should I water Candle Stick Plant - Senecio Stapeliiformis Stapeliiformis Cactus?
A: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil is dry. In summer this typically means every 10 to 14 days; reduce watering to once monthly in winter when the plant enters dormancy.

Q: Is this succulent safe around pets?
A: Candle Stick Plant - Senecio Stapeliiformis Stapeliiformis Cactus contains sap that irritates skin and paws if touched or ingested. Store it on a high shelf out of reach of cats, dogs, and children.

Q: What window direction works best for Senecio Stapeliiformis indoors?
A: East or west-facing windows provide ideal bright indirect light without scorch risk. South-facing windows work only if the plant is set back from the glass or filtered by sheer curtains.

Q: Can I propagate from cuttings?
A: Senecio Stapeliiformis propagates most reliably from stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to callous for a few days, then place it in dry, gritty succulent mix and hold off watering for the first week.

Q: Does Candle Stick Plant need a winter rest period?
A: Cooler temperatures and reduced watering in winter slow growth and prime the plant for spring blooming once warmth returns.

Q: Can I move it outside in summer?
A: Candle Stick Plant thrives in warm summer weather outdoors in a sheltered spot with bright indirect light. Bring it inside before frost and cover it during heavy rain to prevent rot.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
