  •   Mammillaria bocasana, also called Powder Puff Cactus, is a clumping cactus in the Mammillaria genus within the Cactaceae family. Native to the rocky highlands of central Mexico, this drought-tolerant cactus grows on slopes and hillsides where drainage is excellent and sunlight is abundant. It has a devoted following among collectors and beginners alike for its compact form.

Small green globes cluster and multiply as the plant matures, each densely coated in soft white silky spines that give it that signature snowball appearance. Hooked central spines tuck among the tubercles beneath the fluffy exterior, creating surprisingly spiky texture under the powder-puff coat. Over time, individual heads build into a full, mounded clump of white-tipped green growth.

Pink to cream-white blooms encircle the crown of each head in a neat halo, typically appearing in late winter through spring. The flowers are small but abundant, creating an impressive display on such a compact plant. Encouraging blooms requires a cool night temperature drop during winter rest, so move it to a cooler room in the evening when flowering season approaches.

Mammillaria bocasana does well indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors during summer in USDA zones 8 through 10. Its slow growth rate makes it suitable for small spaces and desktops. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The hooked spines make it best placed away from small children and high-traffic spots at toddler height, though it is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Powder Puff Cactus - Mammillaria Bocasana grows in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, but may scorch in intense south-facing windows during peak summer.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during spring and summer, reducing to once a month or less in fall and winter.

Mammillaria bocasana does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite or coarse sand for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50 and 85°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

Mammillaria bocasana is a slow grower needing only a light balanced cactus fertilizer once or twice during the active spring and summer growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 8 through 10, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best with frost protection. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and warm-climate regions within zone 10. In the continental United States, it grows in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, and coastal Oregon and Washington.
  • Q: Is Powder Puff Cactus - Mammillaria Bocasana safe to keep around cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The sharp hooked spines can cause physical irritation, so keep it away from curious paws.

Q: What's the best window placement for bright indirect light?
A: An east or west-facing window works well for Powder Puff Cactus - Mammillaria Bocasana. Avoid intense south-facing placement in summer where direct afternoon sun can scorch the spines.

Q: How fast does Mammillaria bocasana grow?
A: It grows slowly, gradually forming a clumping mound of offsets over several years. This compact growth makes it suitable for windowsills and confined spaces.

Q: Can I propagate the plant from offsets?
A: Mammillaria bocasana propagates easily by gently separating the offsets that form around the base of the mother plant. Allow cut ends to callous for a day or two, then plant in dry cactus mix and water lightly after a week.

Q: Does Powder Puff Cactus need special care when moved outside in summer?
A: Move it to a bright spot with some protection from heavy rain, as excess moisture causes rot. Bring it back indoors before the first frost of autumn.

Q: What causes yellowing on the plant?
A: Yellowing in Powder Puff Cactus is most often caused by overwatering or poor drainage, both of which lead to root rot in this drought-tolerant species. Check that your soil drains freely and allow it to dry out completely between waterings.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
