  •   Echeveria Black Prince is a succulent hybrid in the Crassulaceae family, descended from Echeveria affinis and Echeveria shaviana. This dark hens and chicks variety originated through cultivation and is a favorite for its dramatic near-black foliage and compact rosette form. You'll find 'Black Prince' widely available in 2" and 4" pot sizes at most garden centers.

'Black Prince' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes of pointed, spoon-shaped leaves that graduate from deep olive-green at the center to intense purple-black at the tips. The leaves have a smooth, slightly waxy surface that catches light and gives the plant a jewel-like appearance. It offsets readily as it matures, producing clusters that fill out the pot with a sculptural arrangement.

It sends up tall flower stalks in autumn and winter, bearing clusters of small, vivid red to scarlet blooms that stand out against those near-black leaves. Flowers are not fragrant. A nighttime temperature drop triggers this seasonal display, and moving it outdoors in summer and early autumn helps encourage natural blooming.

Leave it on a sunny windowsill, patio container, or include it in a succulent dish garden. You can leave it up to ten days without water. 'Black Prince' is non-toxic to cats and dogs, so you can display it confidently in any home, though placing it on a higher shelf keeps those perfect rosettes safe from curious paws.

  •   Echeveria Black Prince grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun with at least four to six hours of direct sun daily.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days in summer, then reduce to once every 3 to 4 weeks in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

'Black Prince' does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with 30 to 50 percent perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 80°F and should be protected from frost below 25°F.

'Black Prince' is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and the southern tips of Nevada and Oregon. Parts of Arkansas, North Carolina, and coastal regions of Washington state can also grow it outdoors with winter protection, though container growing lets gardeners in other states move it indoors when temperatures drop.
  • Q: How often should I water Echeveria Black Prince?
A: During the growing season, water when the soil surface feels dry to the touch. Overwatering causes root rot faster than any other issue. In winter, extend the interval between waterings significantly.

Q: Which window direction works best for this plant?
A: Echeveria Black Prince develops its darkest purple-black color in bright light. A south or east-facing window is ideal; without enough sun, it fades to green.

Q: How big does 'Black Prince' get?
A: A single rosette typically reaches 3 to 6 inches across. It offsets readily, so a mature plant will spread wider as it clusters.

Q: Is it safe around cats and dogs?
A: 'Black Prince' is non-toxic and safe for both cats and dogs.

Q: How do I propagate 'Black Prince'?
A: The easiest method is to twist off a healthy leaf from the base, let it callous for a day or two, then lay it on dry succulent mix. You can also separate and repot the offsets that naturally cluster around the mother plant.

Q: Can this plant survive a long trip without a sitter?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water. For trips longer than that, have someone water it once midway through.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
