  •   Adromischus Triflorus, also called Calico Hearts, is a rare South African succulent from the Crassulaceae family. Native to rocky, arid regions of South Africa, it has adapted to grow in bright light and excellent drainage with minimal water. This drought tolerant succulent remains genuinely difficult to find, making it a standout addition to any serious plant collection.

The heart-shaped leaves are plump and grey-green with reddish-purple mottled markings that give the plant its calico name. It grows in a clumping, upright habit, forming tidy clusters of short stems lined with chunky, patterned leaves. The overall look is compact and sculptural, densely packed with character.

It produces slender tubular flowers on upright stalks, typically appearing in spring to early summer when nighttime temperatures drop. The blooms are small and add seasonal interest to the foliage. Even outside of bloom season, the calico markings and compact clumping growth keep this plant looking exceptional year-round.

This succulent can spend warm months outdoors in a sheltered spot, though heavy rain requires protection. Once you place it in bright indirect to direct light indoors, let it settle there, as it is sensitive to frequent moving. Rotate it occasionally for even growth and keep it away from direct heating or cooling vents. Leaf and stem cuttings both propagate easily, though growth is slow.

  •   Calico Hearts Cotyledon Maculata - Adromischus triflorus grows well in bright indirect light to partial or direct sun, but avoids intense south-facing windows that may scorch leaves.

Water it every 10-14 days during summer, reducing to once monthly in winter. Slight leaf wrinkling indicates thirst.

Adromischus Triflorus does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix of cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse pumice at a 50/50 ratio.

It prefers temperatures between 50-85°F and requires protection from frost below 40°F.

Adromischus Triflorus is a slow, compact grower that benefits from light balanced fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina, plus coastal portions of Oregon and Washington. Outside these zones, including New Mexico, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina, it performs best as a container plant moved indoors before first frost.
  • Q: How often should I water Calico Hearts Cotyledon Maculata - Adromischus triflorus?
A: Check the soil first; if the top inch is dry, water thoroughly until it drains from the pot. In summer the soil dries faster than in winter, when the plant enters dormancy and needs far less frequent watering.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Calico Hearts Cotyledon Maculata - Adromischus triflorus sap may cause skin or paw irritation and can be harmful if ingested. Keeping it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and toddlers is recommended.

Q: What indoor light conditions does Adromischus Triflorus prefer?
A: East or west-facing windows work well, providing bright indirect light or a few hours of gentle direct sun. South-facing windows often scorch the leaves.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Adromischus Triflorus propagates from both leaf and stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to callous for a day or two before placing it on dry, gritty soil.

Q: Can Calico Hearts spend summer outdoors?
A: Yes, it loves a warm, bright outdoor spot in summer. Provide shelter from heavy rain, as excess moisture causes rot.

Q: Why is Calico Hearts so hard to find?
A: It grows slowly, produces limited offsets, and isn't widely propagated commercially, which keeps supply low and collector demand consistently high.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
