Tillandsias are epiphytes, meaning they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots, making the sea urchin shell a perfect, soil-free home. The combination brings together the organic beauty of the ocean and the living world of plants in one striking display.
The purple urchin shells have a smooth, rounded form with a naturally deep violet hue and a small opening at the top that cradles the air plant snugly. Tillandsia foliage is slender and arching, ranging from silvery green to gray-green depending on the variety, with a soft, slightly fuzzy texture from tiny moisture-absorbing scales called trichomes. Grouped together on a windowsill, shelf, or tabletop, the three pieces create a cohesive, gallery-worthy arrangement that suits modern, coastal, and bohemian interiors equally well.

Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day. They can tolerate lower light conditions but will grow more slowly and may lose some of their silvery vibrancy. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Water your air plants once a week by removing them from the urchin shells and soaking them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes. Shake off any excess water and allow them to dry completely, upside down if possible, before returning them to the shells. In drier climates or during winter heating season, misting two to three times per week between soaks helps keep the leaves hydrated.
Tillandsias prefer temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 32 degrees Celsius). They do best in average household humidity and appreciate occasional ventilation. Keep them away from heating and cooling vents, which can dry them out too quickly, and protect them from cold drafts near windows in winter.
Feed your Tillandsias once a month using a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter strength. Add it to the soaking water during your regular watering routine. Fertilizing encourages fuller growth and increases the chance of blooming, though it is completely optional for keeping the plants healthy.
