Tillandsia, commonly known as air plants, are a diverse genus in the Bromeliad family native to the forests, mountains, and deserts of Central and South America. This collection pairs an assorted Tillandsia variety with a genuine Pink Murex seashell, creating a natural display that brings together two wonders of the natural world. Each shell is unique, and the air plant nestled inside is hand-selected for health and visual appeal.
Tillandsia air plants feature slender, arching leaves that range from soft green to silvery grey, often with fine trichomes that give the foliage a delicate, frosted texture. Depending on the variety selected, some may blush pink, red, or purple when approaching bloom. Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place the arrangement near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day. An east or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. In lower-light rooms, a full-spectrum grow light for a few hours daily works well as a supplement.
Water your air plant by removing it gently from the shell and submerging it in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake off excess water and set the plant upside down on a towel for about an hour before returning it to the shell. This prevents water from pooling at the base, which can cause rot. In drier climates or winter months, a light misting between soaks helps keep the plant hydrated.
Air plants prefer temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) and do well in the typical range found inside most homes. They appreciate moderate humidity, making them especially happy in kitchens and bathrooms. Keep them away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units, all of which can dry out the foliage rapidly.
Feeding is optional but encourages faster growth and more vibrant blooms. Use a bromeliad or Tillandsia-specific liquid fertilizer diluted to one quarter strength, added to your soaking water once a month. Avoid copper-based fertilizers, which can harm air plants. Regular watering without fertilizer is perfectly sufficient for a healthy, long-lived plant.
