  •   Senecio Rowleyanus, also called String Of Pearls, is a trailing succulent native to the rocky, semi-arid regions of southwest Africa. It creeps along the ground beneath shrubs in its natural habitat and adapts seamlessly to bright indoor spaces and hanging baskets. It brings cascading visual interest to any room or shelf.

The signature feature is unmistakable: round, pea-sized green beads line each slender trailing stem like a living strand of pearls. The spherical leaves store water efficiently, making the plant drought tolerant and resilient during periods without watering. It grows in 2" and 4" pot sizes and cascades from hanging baskets and high shelves, creating a natural trailing form that spreads as it matures.

When exposed to a nighttime temperature drop in late autumn and winter, it produces small white pompom-style flowers with a light, sweet cinnamon-like fragrance. Blooms typically appear in late winter to spring. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep cats and dogs away from the plant entirely.

It handles dry air without issue and can leave it up to ten days without water. Move it outside for summer in Zones 9 and 10, though protect it from rain to prevent root rot. The pearl-like beads will show slight shriveling when the plant needs water.

  •   String Of Pearls - Senecio Rowleyanus grows well in bright indirect light and will scorch if placed directly in a south-facing window.

Water it deeply every 10 to 14 days during spring and summer, then reduce to once every three to four weeks in winter.

Senecio Rowleyanus does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with extra perlite for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and should be protected from frost below 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

Senecio Rowleyanus is a moderate grower that benefits from a diluted balanced fertilizer applied once monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA Zones 9 through 11, tolerating minimum temperatures around 25 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. It also does well in mild coastal areas of Oregon, select microclimates in New Mexico, parts of the Pacific Northwest, North Carolina, and Arkansas during warmer months with proper placement and rain protection.
  • Q: How often should I water String Of Pearls - Senecio Rowleyanus?
A: During spring and summer, water when the beads feel slightly less firm to the touch. In winter, extend the interval significantly as the plant enters dormancy and requires less moisture.

Q: Is it safe for pets?
A: No. String Of Pearls - Senecio Rowleyanus contains sap that can cause skin and paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf well out of reach of cats and dogs.

Q: What light direction works best for Senecio Rowleyanus?
A: Place it near an east or west-facing window where it receives bright indirect light. Direct south-facing sun will cause the leaves to scorch.

Q: How do I encourage blooms on this succulent?
A: Senecio Rowleyanus flowers in late winter to spring after a cool nighttime temperature drop in late autumn. A period of reduced watering during winter months helps initiate the blooming cycle.

Q: How do I propagate String Of Pearls?
A: Snip a healthy stem a few inches long, let the cut end callous for a day, then lay it on top of moist cactus mix. Roots develop within a few weeks with warmth and bright indirect light.

Q: Can this plant grow outdoors during summer?
A: Yes, move it to a sheltered, bright spot outdoors for summer, but protect it from direct heavy rain. String Of Pearls should be brought back inside before temperatures drop in autumn.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
