  •   Peperomia Watermelon (Peperomia argyreia), also called watermelon begonia, is a compact tropical houseplant in the Piperaceae family, native to South America, particularly the rainforest floors of Brazil. It grows as a low, mounding perennial that stays small enough for desks, shelves, and terrariums.

The leaves are round to oval, with silvery-green stripes radiating from the center over a darker green background, closely resembling the rind of a watermelon. Each leaf sits on a burgundy-red petiole that attaches at the center of the leaf underside, a structure called a peltate attachment. The leaf surface has a slightly waxy, smooth texture, and individual leaves can reach about two inches across on a mature plant.

Watermelon Peperomia produces small, inconspicuous flower spikes on thin reddish stems. The blooms are pale and carry no noticeable fragrance. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor air.

Tuck it into a terrarium where the enclosed humidity suits it well, or set it near a kitchen window where ambient moisture keeps it comfortable. You can move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but keep it covered from rain and away from direct sun to avoid scorching the foliage. It wilts slightly when dry, and you can leave it up to ten days without water. Sensitive to cold drafts from AC vents or heating units, it does best away from direct airflow.

  •   Peperomia Watermelon grows well in bright indirect light and performs reliably under standard office LED lighting.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Watermelon Peperomia does best in a well-draining mix of peat or coco coir blended with perlite to prevent waterlogging.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should stay away from cold drafts, AC vents, and heating units.

Watermelon Peperomia is a slow to moderate grower, reaching 6 to 12 inches tall, and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in southern Florida, Hawaii, and coastal Southern California. It also grows outdoors in parts of southern Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana where winter temperatures stay consistently mild.
  • Q: Is Peperomia Watermelon safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is considered pet friendly.

Q: How much light does this plant need?
A: Peperomia Watermelon does well a few feet back from an east or west-facing window. A south-facing window can scorch the leaves unless it is kept well away from the glass.

Q: How do I know when Watermelon Peperomia needs water?
A: The leaves and stems wilt slightly when the plant is dry. Check the top inch of soil as well, and wait until it feels dry before watering.

Q: Can I put this plant in a terrarium?
A: Watermelon Peperomia is well suited to terrariums. The enclosed environment holds the humidity it prefers and keeps the roots from drying out too quickly.

Q: Can Watermelon Peperomia be left alone during a short trip?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water as long as it was watered just before you left.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Watermelon Peperomia propagates easily from leaf cuttings. Cut a healthy leaf with its petiole, press it into moist soil or perlite, and roots typically form within a few weeks.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
