  •   Guzmania Bromeliad 'Yellow' (Guzmania spp.) is a tropical bromeliad in the family Bromeliaceae, native to the rainforests of Central and South America and parts of the Caribbean. It grows as an epiphyte in its natural habitat, anchoring onto trees and absorbing moisture and nutrients through its central cup and leaves.

'Yellow' forms a low, spreading rosette of long, strap-shaped leaves that are glossy and mid-green, arching outward from a central water-holding cup. The rosette typically reaches about 12 to 16 inches across. At the center, a bold upright bract structure rises in bright yellow, contrasting against the surrounding green foliage.

The yellow bract is the most prominent feature, lasting several months before gradually fading. Small white or pale tubular flowers emerge from within the bract, though they are short-lived compared to the bract itself. It releases oxygen at night, and it actively filters formaldehyde and other toxins from indoor air, so it works well in bedrooms or home offices.

Place it near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays naturally higher, since it needs high humidity to perform at its best. Keep it away from air conditioning and heating vents, as the dry blowing air causes the leaf tips to brown. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot with cover from rain, since standing water in the central cup can become diluted and introduce rot outdoors. This plant is pet friendly.

  •   Guzmania Bromeliad 'Yellow' grows well in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaves.

It needs water every one to two weeks, poured directly into the central cup, keeping it filled to about one inch.

'Yellow' does best in a fast-draining, loose mix of orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of peat or coco coir.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and browns at the tips when exposed to cold drafts or dry forced air.

'Yellow' is a slow to moderate grower that produces one bloom cycle per plant, with offsets (pups) appearing at the base after flowering.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where temperatures stay above 30°F to 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana. It also does well outdoors in Puerto Rico and other warm US territories within those zones.
  • Q: How much light does Guzmania Bromeliad 'Yellow' need indoors?
A: A north- or east-facing window works well. A west-facing window is fine if the plant sits a few feet back from the glass. Leaf edges that turn pale or papery are a sign of too much direct sun.

Q: Is this bromeliad safe for cats and dogs?
A: Guzmania Bromeliad 'Yellow' is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know if 'Yellow' is getting too much water?
A: Check the central cup first. If it smells stagnant or the base of the plant feels soft or mushy, the cup has been overfilled or water has pooled at the roots too long. Flush the cup with fresh water weekly to prevent bacterial buildup.

Q: Does this bromeliad need a humidifier to thrive indoors?
A: Not necessarily. 'Yellow' does well placed near a kitchen sink or on a pebble tray with water beneath the pot, which keeps ambient moisture higher without a humidifier.

Q: Can 'Yellow' grow under office lighting?
A: It grows under office LED lighting as long as the lights are on for at least 12 hours a day. Rotate the pot every few weeks so all sides of the rosette receive even exposure.

Q: What happens after the yellow bract fades?
A: 'Yellow' produces offsets, called pups, at the base of the mother plant once blooming is complete. The mother plant gradually declines, but the pups can be separated once they reach about one-third the size of the parent and potted up individually.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
