  •   Fern 'Sprengeri', also called asparagus fern or emerald fern, is a trailing houseplant in the Asparagaceae family, native to South Africa. Known botanically as Asparagus aethiopicus (also listed as Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri'), it grows naturally in coastal scrub and forest margins where humidity stays high year-round.

The stems arch outward and trail downward in long, feathery sprays covered in flat, needle-like cladodes that are bright green and soft to the touch. Each stem can reach two to three feet in length, with a dense, layered texture that fills out a hanging basket generously. The root system runs deep and thick, and the plant benefits from a heavy pot to anchor the weight of its trailing growth.

Small white to pale pink flowers appear along the stems in summer, followed by bright red berries that persist into autumn. The blooms carry a faint, light fragrance. Sprengeri Fern also filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, and the foliage releases moisture into the surrounding air as it transpires.

Hang it near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays naturally higher. It wilts slightly when the soil gets too dry, which makes it straightforward to read. Move it outside for the summer months, though it needs shelter from heavy rain and strong midday sun. Cats, dogs, and small children should not be left around it, as both the sap and berries can cause skin irritation, and the plant is harmful if ingested. Keep Sprengeri Fern on a high shelf or in a ceiling hook well out of reach.

  •   Fern 'Sprengeri' grows well in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the cladodes.

It needs water every 7-10 days in the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

Sprengeri Fern does best in a well-draining, peat-free mix with added perlite to prevent waterlogging around its tuberous roots.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

Sprengeri Fern is a fast-growing trailing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Georgia. It can move outside for summer in zone 8 with protection from frost in autumn.
  • Q: Is Fern 'Sprengeri' safe to keep around pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf or hung from a ceiling hook well out of reach of both pets and small children.

Q: How do I know if my plant needs more humidity?
A: Fern 'Sprengeri' will begin to drop cladodes and develop brown, crispy tips when the air is too dry. Placing it near a kitchen or bathroom, or grouping it with other plants, helps raise the ambient moisture around it.

Q: Where should I hang Sprengeri Fern in my home?
A: An east- or west-facing window works well, close enough to receive bright light without the glass concentrating heat onto the foliage. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week or two so all sides receive even light.

Q: How quickly does this plant grow?
A: Sprengeri Fern puts out new stems quickly in spring and summer, often extending several inches per month under good conditions. Growth slows noticeably in winter when light levels drop.

Q: Can Sprengeri Fern grow under office lighting?
A: It can sustain growth under bright LED office lights positioned close overhead, though the stems tend to stay shorter and less full than they would near a window.

Q: What happens if the plant is overwatered?
A: Sprengeri Fern will yellow along the stems and the tuberous roots can begin to rot when the soil stays consistently wet. If the pot feels heavy and the soil shows no sign of drying after ten or more days, reduce watering frequency and check that drainage holes are clear.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
