  •   Golden English Ivy (Hedera helix 'Goldchild'), also called variegated ivy, is a trailing, vining houseplant in the Araliaceae family native to Europe and western Asia. It has been cultivated widely as both an indoor and outdoor plant, known for its gold-edged foliage and adaptable growth habit.

The leaves are small and lobed, with a gray-green center bordered by irregular yellow-gold margins that hold their color indoors. Stems trail and vine outward from the pot, building long cascading lengths over time. It belongs to the genus Hedera and grows in the classic ivy form, with each node producing new roots readily when in contact with a moist surface.

Golden English Ivy rarely flowers as a houseplant, so its leaf texture and trailing growth are what most people are working with year-round. The foliage is firm and waxy to the touch, and the vines build length steadily across a shelf, down a bookcase, or out of a hanging basket. It filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, contributing to cleaner indoor air as it grows.

Place it in a hanging basket with a sturdy hook, or set it on a high shelf where the vines can extend downward freely. Move it outside for summer in a spot with shade or filtered light, and it can stay out through autumn in mild climates. Ivy thrives near the natural humidity of a kitchen and does well in a terrarium environment. Keep it out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children, as the sap can cause skin and paw irritation, and the plant should not be nibbled or eaten.

  •   Golden English Ivy grows well in medium light or bright indirect light, away from direct south-facing windows.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

Ivy does best in a well-draining potting mix with added perlite to prevent waterlogging.

It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 75°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning or heater vents.

Ivy is a moderate to fast trailing vine; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9, tolerating frost down to around -20°F in the hardiest zones. It grows outdoors in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. It can also overwinter outdoors in parts of the Midwest and Pacific Northwest within those zone ranges.
  • Q: Is Golden English Ivy safe for pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can irritate skin and paws on contact. It's best placed on a high shelf away from small children as well.

Q: How much light does this plant actually need near a window?
A: Golden English Ivy does well within a few feet of an east- or west-facing window. A south-facing window is too intense and can leave pale, bleached patches on the leaf margins.

Q: How do I know when Ivy needs water?
A: The leaves will wilt slightly and the stems may soften when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering.

Q: How fast does this plant grow, and does it need rotating?
A: Ivy puts out new growth steadily through spring and summer, and the vines can get quite long within a single season. Rotating the pot a quarter turn every week or two keeps growth even on all sides.

Q: Can Ivy grow under office or indoor artificial lighting?
A: It grows well under office LED lighting as long as the lights are on for a reasonable portion of the day. Low-wattage incandescent bulbs alone won't give it enough intensity to maintain its gold leaf margins.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Ivy propagates easily from stem cuttings placed in water or moist soil. Each cutting should include at least one node, which is the small bump along the stem where roots will emerge.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
