This striking and resilient plant, commonly known as Crown of Thorns, Christ Plant, or Christ Thorn, is a woody, perennial, and semi-succulent shrub. It is a member of the large spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and gets its common name from the legend that its thorny stems were used to fashion the crown worn by Jesus Christ.
The most notable feature is the dense covering of sharp, stout thorns (spines) along its woody, water-storing stems. It is extremely drought-tolerant and can bloom year-round under ideal conditions. Its resilience and striking appearance make it a popular houseplant worldwide.
The plant produces tiny, inconspicuous true flowers that are surrounded by a pair of showy, long-lasting, petal-like bracts.
