  •   Sansevieria trifasciata 'Emerald Star', also called Snake Plant Emerald Star, is a sculptural rosette-forming succulent in the Asparagaceae family, native to the tropical regions of West Africa. It grows naturally in rocky, arid environments and has adapted over centuries to low water and low light conditions.

'Emerald Star' forms a tight, star-shaped rosette of broad, upright leaves that radiate outward from a central point. The leaves are deep green with pale silvery-green crossbanding and slightly wavy margins, giving the foliage a layered, overlapping appearance. Each leaf is thick, stiff, and pointed at the tip, and the whole rosette typically stays low and compact rather than growing tall like other sansevierias.

Mature plants occasionally produce a slender flower spike bearing small, tubular, off-white to pale greenish flowers with a light fragrance, most often in late winter or early spring. Flowering is infrequent indoors and not guaranteed each year. It also filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins from indoor air and releases oxygen at night rather than during the day.

You can leave it up to ten days without water, which covers travel or busy stretches without any intervention. Move it outside for summer once nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 50°F, and bring it back in before the first frost. Cats, dogs, and other pets should be kept away from the plant, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation if contacted, and the plant should not be ingested. Keep it on a high shelf or out of reach of small children as well. It grows well under standard office LED lighting, though it may lean slightly over time and benefit from an occasional quarter-turn for even growth.

  •   Snake Plant Emerald Star grows well in low to bright indirect light, including under standard office LEDs.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in spring and summer, and reduce to once a month in winter.

'Emerald Star' does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and should be kept away from AC vents and heating units.

'Emerald Star' is a slow-growing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Hawaii. It also grows outdoors in parts of Oregon, Alabama, and Mississippi where winters remain mild.
  • Q: Is Snake Plant Emerald Star safe for cats and dogs?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so keep it somewhere pets cannot reach.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Snake Plant Emerald Star wilts slightly and its leaves may feel slightly less firm when the soil has been dry too long. Check the soil before watering — it should be completely dry an inch or two down.

Q: Can 'Emerald Star' handle low light in an office or apartment?
A: It grows well under standard fluorescent and LED office lighting, and handles north-facing or shaded rooms without trouble. Avoid placing it in direct south-facing sun, as the leaves can scorch.

Q: How big does it get?
A: 'Emerald Star' stays compact, typically reaching 6 to 12 inches in height and spreading wider than it grows tall due to its rosette habit.

Q: Can Snake Plant Emerald Star be left alone during a 10-day vacation?
A: It can go up to ten days without water without any visible decline. Make sure the soil is dry before you leave rather than freshly watered.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Snake Plant Emerald Star can be propagated by dividing offsets (pups) that emerge at the base of the mother plant. Separate a pup with a clean cut once it has a few leaves, pot it in well-draining mix, and let the cut callous for a day before planting.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
