  •   Haworthia retusa White Ghost is a rare variegated succulent native to the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and grows in rocky, semi-arid terrain, sheltering under shrubs and stones where filtered light filters through the canopy. Genuine plants with this white-ghost variegation are difficult to source.

It forms a tight rosette of plump, triangular leaves heavily variegated in soft gray, white, and pale green, giving the plant its luminous, ghostly appearance. The leaf tips are flat and translucent, known as "windows," which allow light to penetrate internal tissue—a signature trait of the retusa group. Over time it produces offsets at the base, gradually expanding into a clumping formation as the plant matures. A single rosette reaches about 3 to 5 inches in diameter.

It produces slender flower stalks in spring or summer bearing small tubular white blooms with subtle greenish veining. The flowers emerge on healthy, mature plants, and a slight drop in nighttime temperatures during late winter can encourage flowering.

Rotate the pot occasionally to promote even, symmetrical rosette growth. It is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs, though the sap can cause mild skin or paw irritation on contact. It adapts well to terrariums, office desks, windowsills, and even standard office LED lighting. Gently separate offsets forming around the base of the mother plant to propagate, allowing the offset to callous for a day before potting in fresh succulent mix.

  •   Haworthia retusa White Ghost grows well in medium to bright indirect light or partial sun and scorches in south-facing windows with intense direct sun.

Water it every 2 to 3 weeks during spring and summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Haworthia Retusa does best in a well-draining succulent or cactus mix blended with extra perlite to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 85°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 40°F.

Haworthia Retusa is a slow grower needing only light feeding with diluted balanced fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25 to 30°F but performing best with frost-free winters. It grows outdoors year-round across much of California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Warmer pockets of Oregon, coastal regions of North Carolina, and parts of New Mexico also support outdoor cultivation.
  • Q: How often should I water Haworthia retusa White Ghost?
A: Every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. Scale back to once a month in winter to avoid root rot.

Q: Can this plant survive indoors under artificial light?
A: Haworthia retusa White Ghost adapts well to standard office LED lighting and grows well in bright indirect conditions away from direct sun.

Q: Does Haworthia Retusa stay small?
A: A single rosette reaches about 3 to 5 inches in diameter. Over time it produces offsets that gradually expand the overall clumping spread.

Q: Is it safe for cats and dogs?
A: Haworthia Retusa is non-toxic and pet friendly. The sap can cause mild skin or paw irritation on contact, so handle with care during repotting.

Q: How do I propagate Haworthia Retusa?
A: Gently separate the offsets forming around the base of the mother plant. Allow the offset to callous for a day before potting in fresh, well-draining succulent mix.

Q: Is this a rare plant?
A: Haworthia Retusa has white-ghost variegation that is not widely available in standard garden centers, making it uncommon among commercial succulent suppliers.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
