Haworthia Retusa is a compact succulent native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it grows among rocky, semi-arid terrain under sparse scrub. Also called the star cactus succulent, this beginner plant has earned a devoted following among collectors and first-time growers alike for its low-maintenance nature and distinctive form.

Window Haworthia forms a tight, clumping rosette of thick, triangular leaves tipped with flattened, translucent "windows" that glow lime green. Each leaf catches and diffuses light, creating the star-shaped silhouette that defines the plant's appearance. The rosettes stay compact, typically reaching 3 to 5 inches in diameter, and over time it develops attractive clumps as offsets form around the mother plant.

While not grown primarily for its blooms, plants that experience a slight temperature drop in late winter or spring may produce slender stalks bearing small, tubular white flowers. It also releases oxygen at night.

Window Haworthia works well on desks, shelves, and terrariums, and you can move it outside to a sheltered patio spot for summer. Keep it away from rain and harsh afternoon sun when outdoors. It grows outdoors year-round across California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada, as well as coastal areas of Oregon and parts of North Carolina.
