  •   Alocasia Reginula 'Black Velvet', also called Little Queen, is a compact tropical houseplant native to the rainforest floors of Borneo. It belongs to the Araceae family and grows naturally in humid, shaded understory environments where filtered light and consistent warmth prevail.

The leaves are small, heart-shaped, and covered in a deep, near-black velvety texture with bright silver veins running across the surface. Each leaf sits on a short stem, and the plant holds a tight, upright rosette form that stays compact even at maturity. The contrast between the dark leaf surface and the silver-veined foliage is one of the most visually distinct features among jewel alocasia varieties.

'Black Velvet' rarely blooms indoors, and when it does, the flowers are small and insignificant compared to the foliage. It is on the list of rare collector plants, with availability limited compared to more common alocasia varieties. The leaves purify indoor air and filter formaldehyde and other airborne toxins as the plant grows.

Keep 'Black Velvet' on a high shelf or in a spot well out of reach, as the sap can cause skin and paw irritation, and the plant should be kept away from cats, dogs, and small children. It is sensitive to being moved, so once you find a good position, try to leave it there. You can move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but cover it from rain, as the large, velvety leaves are prone to water damage. Its compact size suits terrarium planting, and it does well near kitchen moisture where ambient humidity stays higher.

  •   Alocasia Reginula 'Black Velvet' thrives in bright indirect light and scorches easily in south-facing windows.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Black Velvet' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and is sensitive to drafts from air conditioning or heating vents.

'Black Velvet' is a slow grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, tolerating temperatures no lower than around 30°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and the southernmost parts of California and Texas. It can spend summers outside in containers across much of the continental United States when temperatures stay consistently above 60°F.
  • Q: How much humidity does Alocasia Reginula 'Black Velvet' need?
A: It needs high humidity, ideally above 60%. A pebble tray with water, a small humidifier, or placing it in a terrarium all help maintain that level indoors.

Q: What does overwatering look like in this plant?
A: Alocasia Reginula 'Black Velvet' will develop yellowing leaves and mushy stems at the base when it has been watered too frequently. The soil staying wet for more than two weeks without drying at the top is a clear sign to cut back.

Q: Can 'Black Velvet' grow under office lighting?
A: It can manage under bright LED office lighting, as long as the light is consistent throughout the day and the plant sits close to the source.

Q: Is this plant safe around pets?
A: 'Black Velvet' should be kept well out of reach of cats and dogs. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, and the plant should not be nibbled or ingested by animals.

Q: Why are the leaves on my Little Queen wilting?
A: It wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too long. Check the top layer of soil and water if it feels dry an inch down.

Q: How big does Little Queen get?
A: Little Queen stays compact, typically reaching around 12 to 18 inches in height at full maturity, with individual leaves growing to about 6 inches long.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
