  •   Schefflera Arboricola 'Umbrella', also called Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a tropical evergreen native to Taiwan and Hainan, where it grows as an understory shrub beneath larger forest canopies. It belongs to the Araliaceae family and has become a go-to tropical houseplant for indoor spaces of nearly any size.

Each stem of 'Umbrella' carries a ring of glossy green leaves arranged in a spoke pattern, typically seven to nine leaflets per group. The leaflets are oval, smooth-edged, and reach about two to three inches each. New growth emerges in a lighter green before deepening, and stems thicken over time into woody trunks on mature plants.

Indoor specimens rarely flower outside their native tropical climate, so blooms are not a regular feature of 'Umbrella' grown as a houseplant. What it does offer year-round is active air-purifying work, filtering formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the surrounding air. It also contributes a degree of natural humidity to its immediate environment as its leaves transpire.

Rotate 'Umbrella' a quarter turn every week or two so all sides receive equal light and the canopy fills in evenly. It settles in well near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps humidity higher. Once positioned, avoid moving it frequently, as repeated relocating causes leaf drop. Move it outside for summer once nighttime temperatures stay reliably above 55°F, then bring it back indoors before the first autumn chill.

  •   Schefflera Arboricola 'Umbrella' grows well under bright indirect light and handles standard office LED lighting without issue.

Water it every ten to fourteen days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

'Umbrella' does best in a well-draining potting mix blended with perlite to prevent waterlogging at the roots.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning vents or nearby heaters.

'Umbrella' is a moderate-to-fast grower indoors, and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12, tolerating outdoor conditions where temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Arizona, and Texas along the Gulf Coast. It also grows outside in Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories within those zones.
  • Q: Is Schefflera Arboricola 'Umbrella' safe around pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf or in a spot well away from small children and pets.

Q: How do I know when it needs more water?
A: Schefflera Arboricola 'Umbrella' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering rather than going by a fixed calendar.

Q: Why is 'Umbrella' dropping so many leaves?
A: Leaf drop most often follows a recent move to a new spot. Give it two to three weeks in a stable location without repositioning and new growth should resume.

    Q: Can I place it near a south-facing window?
A: Direct sun through a south-facing window can scorch the leaves of 'Umbrella'. A few feet back from the window, or behind a sheer curtain, keeps the light intensity at a safer level.

Q: Can Dwarf Umbrella Tree survive while I'm away on a trip?
A: It can go up to ten days without watering. Keep the soil slightly moist before you leave rather than bone dry, and place it away from any heating or cooling vents that could dry the air around it faster.

Q: What size pot works best for this plant?
A: Dwarf Umbrella Tree develops a substantial root system over time, so a heavier ceramic or terracotta pot helps keep it stable as it grows taller and wider. Repot up one size when roots begin circling the bottom of the current container.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
