  •   Begonia Maculata, also called Polka Dot Begonia, is a tropical houseplant native to the Atlantic rainforests of southeastern Brazil. It belongs to the Begoniaceae family and grows naturally in humid, shaded forest understories.

The leaves are large, asymmetrical, and angel-wing shaped, reaching up to 8 inches long on mature plants. The upper surface is deep olive-green covered in silver spots, while the undersides are a deep burgundy-red. Stems are thick, bamboo-like, and upright, and the plant can grow several feet tall indoors.

Begonia Maculata produces clusters of small white flowers with yellow centers, typically blooming in spring and summer. The blooms appear on drooping stems and are lightly fragrant. It can bloom multiple times a year under consistent bright indirect light and high humidity conditions.

Rotate the pot regularly so all sides receive even light exposure. Begonia Maculata does well near a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays naturally higher, and it also grows well in a terrarium setup where humidity stays consistent. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed on a high shelf away from small children, as the sap can cause skin and paw irritation. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot with cover from rain, and bring it back in before temperatures drop in autumn.

  •   Begonia Maculata grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct southern exposure that scorches the leaves.

Water it thoroughly every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

Begonia Maculata does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and a small amount of coco coir.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 86°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heater drafts.

Begonia Maculata is a fast grower indoors and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F through winter. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and parts of coastal Texas and Louisiana. It can also spend summers outside in containers across zones 4-9, including states like New York, Illinois, Georgia, Oregon, and Colorado, before coming back indoors when temperatures cool.
  • Q: Can Begonia Maculata grow under office LED lighting?
A: It can manage under bright LED office lights placed close enough to provide consistent intensity, though growth may slow compared to a well-lit window position.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant starting to curl or go limp?
A: Begonia Maculata wilts and the leaves curl slightly when the soil has been dry too long or when it is sitting in a draft from an AC unit or heater vent.

Q: Is Begonia Maculata sensitive to being moved around the house?
A: It is. Frequent repositioning can cause leaf drop as it adjusts to each new light and humidity level, so pick a consistent spot and leave it there.

Q: How do I know when my plant needs more water?
A: Begonia Maculata shows its thirst clearly by wilting slightly and the leaves losing their firmness before the stem droops.

Q: Is Polka Dot Begonia safe to keep around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should be kept away from it. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, and the plant should not be eaten by pets or small children.

Q: Does the air quality improve with a houseplant like this indoors?
A: Polka Dot Begonia does purify indoor air and can help filter airborne toxins including formaldehyde. Note that it also produces pollen, which may affect people with plant allergies.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
