  •   Alocasia 'Regal Shields', also called Elephant Ear, is a large tropical houseplant in the family Araceae, bred from a cross between Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula. It originates from hybrid cultivation rather than a single wild habitat, drawing on parent species native to tropical Southeast Asia.

The leaves of 'Regal Shields' are broad, deeply lobed, and arrow-shaped, reaching up to three feet long on mature plants. The upper surface is dark green with a velvety texture and slightly raised veining, while the underside is deep burgundy-purple. Stems are thick and upright, giving the plant a floor-plant scale that suits large indoor spaces.

'Regal Shields' produces spathe-type flowers typical of the Araceae family, though it blooms infrequently indoors and the flowers are modest compared to the foliage. The plant does produce pollen, which can be a consideration for allergy-sensitive households. It also filters indoor air, processing common airborne compounds found in home environments.

Rotate 'Regal Shields' every few weeks so all sides receive equal light exposure. It wilts slightly when the soil gets too dry. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as direct airflow from either causes the leaf edges to brown. The sap can irritate skin and paws on contact, cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed on a high shelf or out of reach of small children. Move it outside for the summer months once nighttime temperatures stay reliably above 60°F, and bring it back indoors before the first frost.

  •   Alocasia 'Regal Shields' thrives in bright indirect light and scorches in direct south-facing sun.

Water it every 7-10 days in the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Regal Shields' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and suffers below 55°F.

'Regal Shields' is a fast-growing plant in warm months; feed it a balanced liquid fertilizer every two weeks in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F-30°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Arizona, and South Carolina. It also grows outdoors in parts of Oregon and Washington along the coast where winters stay mild.
  • Q: How large does Alocasia 'Regal Shields' get indoors?
A: Leaves can reach up to three feet long, and the whole plant commonly grows four to six feet tall in a container with enough light and humidity.

Q: How do I know when to water it?
A: Watch for slight wilting or check that the top inch of soil is dry before watering. Alocasia 'Regal Shields' is more sensitive to overwatering than to missing a session, so soggy soil leads to root rot faster than dry soil does.

Q: Does 'Regal Shields' need high humidity?
A: Yes, it does best above 60% relative humidity. Running a humidifier nearby, placing it near a kitchen, or grouping it with other plants all help maintain the moisture level it needs.

Q: What pot size works best for this plant?
A: 'Regal Shields' develops deep roots and a heavy canopy, so a wide, heavy pot with drainage holes prevents tipping and supports healthy root growth.

Q: Is an Elephant Ear plant safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also irritate skin and paws on contact, so handling with gloves is a good idea during repotting.

Q: Can I move an Elephant Ear outside for the summer?
A: Yes, once outdoor nights stay above 60°F, Elephant Ear can move outside to a sheltered spot with bright indirect light. Bring it back indoors well before temperatures drop toward 55°F, as it is sensitive to the transition and to cold.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
