  •   Echinopsis chamaecereus, also called Peanut Cactus, is a clustering cactus native to the mountainous regions of northwestern Argentina, where it grows at high elevations in cool conditions. This drought-tolerant species belongs to the Echinopsis genus and is sought after by both beginners and collectors for its low-maintenance nature and prolific blooms.

Echinopsis chamaecereus produces clusters of small, finger-like green stems covered in soft, fine white spines that create a peanut-shaped, bumpy texture. It grows in both upright and trailing habits, spreading wide as new offsets emerge and cascade over the pot's edge on a shelf or hanging display.

When conditions are right, it produces vivid scarlet-orange flowers along the stems in spring and early summer. The blooms are surprisingly large relative to the plant's size, and it can rebloom year after year if given a cool night temperature drop around 50°F in late winter to trigger bud formation.

Echinopsis chamaecereus grows well indoors on a bright windowsill or outdoors on a patio during summer, though it needs protection from heavy rain to prevent rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It eventually needs a hanging pot or broad shallow container to accommodate its trailing stems. The plant is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for households with animals.

  •   Peanut Cactus - Echinopsis chamaecereus grows well in bright indirect light and can scorch in intense south-facing direct sun.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, reducing to once a month or less in winter.

Echinopsis chamaecereus does best in fast-draining cactus mix blended with extra perlite for excellent drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50-85°F and benefits from cooler nights around 50°F to set buds for spring blooming.

Echinopsis chamaecereus is a moderate to fast grower that spreads quickly and benefits from occasional offset removal to stay tidy.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but preferring frost-free conditions. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. It can also be grown seasonally outdoors in Oregon, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee, brought inside before the first frost.
  • Q: Is Peanut Cactus - Echinopsis chamaecereus pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: Why isn't my plant blooming?
A: Peanut Cactus - Echinopsis chamaecereus needs a cool night temperature drop to around 50°F in late winter to form buds; moving it outdoors in autumn naturally provides this seasonal cue.

Q: What light does Echinopsis chamaecereus need indoors?
A: Place it near a bright window with indirect light; south-facing windows work if the plant sits a few feet back from the glass to avoid leaf scorch.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: Echinopsis chamaecereus produces offsets that spread outward at a moderate to fast pace for a cactus, and you may need to repot or remove clusters every couple of years.

Q: Can Peanut Cactus survive a trip without water?
A: Yes. It can go up to ten days without watering during the growing season.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: Gently twist off a small stem segment, let it callous for a day or two, then place it on top of dry cactus mix where it roots quickly.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
