  •   Othonna capensis, also called Ruby Necklace, is a trailing succulent from the Asteraceae family, native to rocky hillsides in the Western Cape region of South Africa. The plant grows naturally in fast-draining soil and dry, sun-drenched conditions. It has become a favorite among collectors and beginner plant parents for its ease of care and appearance.

The leaves are small and bean-shaped, flushing ruby red or deep purple when exposed to plenty of sun, while the wine-colored trailing stems cascade freely. In lower light, the foliage stays green. The stems stretch outward in hanging baskets and elevated planters.

Small, daisy-like yellow flowers bloom most actively in autumn and continue through winter when nighttime temperatures drop. The bright blooms contrast sharply against the ruby and purple foliage. The plant is also non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Hang it in a macrame planter or on a high shelf where the trailing stems can stretch freely, or move it outside for summer to soak up full sun. It can go up to ten days without water and wilts gently when thirsty. Rotate it regularly for even growth, and keep it away from direct air conditioning or heater vents. Propagate it easily from stem cuttings by letting the cut end callous for a day or two, then placing it in well-draining succulent soil.

  •

Water it every 10-14 days, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

Othonna capensis does best in a well-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with perlite for added drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50–85°F and should be protected from frost below 32°F.

Othonna capensis is a moderate to fast grower that benefits from balanced liquid fertilizer applied once monthly during the growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25–30°F with protection. It grows outdoors year-round across California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Georgia. It also grows well in the warmer regions of South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Nevada, and along the mild coastal areas of Oregon and Washington.
  • Q: How often should I water Ruby Necklace Succulent - Othonna capensis?
A: Water every 10-14 days when the top inch of soil dries out. The plant wilts slightly when thirsty.

Q: What light conditions are best indoors?
A: Ruby Necklace Succulent - Othonna capensis achieves the deepest ruby color in full sun but also grows well in bright indirect light from an east or west-facing window. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves if the sun is intense.

    Q: Is Othonna capensis pet-friendly?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for households with curious pets.

Q: Can I propagate it easily?
A: Othonna capensis propagates readily from stem cuttings. Let the cut end callous for one to two days, then insert it into well-draining succulent soil and water sparingly until roots establish.

Q: Can Ruby Necklace tolerate low light?
A: It survives under bright office LED lighting but will lean more green than ruby without natural sun. Place it near the brightest available light source to keep it healthy.

Q: Can I move it outside during warm months?
A: Ruby Necklace spends summer outdoors in partial to full sun. Provide shelter from heavy rain and bring it indoors before nighttime temperatures drop near freezing.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
