  •   Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is a rare and captivating cactus belonging to the Opuntia genus and the Cactaceae family, native to the arid desert regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. This drought tolerant, low humidity plant has adapted over centuries to thrive in rocky, sun-baked landscapes, making it a genuinely tough and rewarding species to grow.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is instantly recognizable by its flattened, paddle-shaped pads arranged in an upright growth style, displaying a striking blue-gray to dusty violet coloration. The pads are covered with clusters of tiny glochids, those fine, barbed bristles that are the hallmark of the Opuntia genus, giving the plant a velvety yet deceptively hazardous texture. This is a narrow grower rather than a wide spreader, making it an excellent fit for tight spaces or a dedicated cactus display.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata produces vivid magenta to deep rose-pink blooms that typically emerge in spring, appearing along the upper edges of the pads when conditions are right. One confirmed key to triggering those blooms is a night temperature drop, so allowing the plant to experience cooler evenings in late winter and early spring genuinely pays off. As a bonus, Opuntia basilaris var. caudata releases oxygen at night, making it a quietly industrious addition to any room.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is a true heirloom plant and a prized find for serious cactus collectors, with the potential to live for many decades when given proper care. Move it outside for summer to soak up the warmth, and it will reward you beautifully, but keep it covered from rain to avoid waterlogged roots. As an outdoor plant and patio plant, it thrives in containers on sunny terraces, though it does need shelter from air conditioning vents and heater drafts indoors. Opuntia basilaris var. caudata has a long history of edible and medicinal use across its native range, adding cultural depth to its already impressive appeal.

  •   Opuntia basilaris var. caudata thrives in bright indirect light but also handles direct sun and tolerates low-light periods short term.

Water Opuntia basilaris var. caudata deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer and once a month or less in winter, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata performs best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix blended with coarse perlite or grit for excellent drainage.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata prefers temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C) and can tolerate brief dips to around 20°F (-6°C) when dry.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer applied once in early spring.

Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is hardy in USDA Zones 8b-11, tolerating frost down to approximately 20°F (-6°C) when kept dry. In the United States, this covers a sweeping range of warm and mild-climate states, including California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and coastal regions of Oregon and Washington. Gardeners growing Opuntia basilaris var. caudata in Arkansas, Tennessee, and parts of North Carolina may also succeed in protected microclimates within Zone 8b.
  • Q: How often should I water Opuntia basilaris var. caudata?
A: Water Opuntia basilaris var. caudata every 2-3 weeks in the growing season and reduce to once a month or less in winter. Always let the soil dry out completely before watering again.

Q: Is Opuntia basilaris var. caudata pet friendly?
A: This plant is pet friendly and is not considered toxic to cats or dogs. However, the glochids and spines on Opuntia basilaris var. caudata can cause sap and skin or paw irritation on contact, so keep it out of reach of curious pets.

Q: How much light does Opuntia basilaris var. caudata need?
A: Opuntia basilaris var. caudata thrives in bright indirect light and can handle direct sun outdoors. Avoid prolonged low-light conditions indoors as this can slow growth and reduce blooming.

Q: Can Opuntia basilaris var. caudata survive while I travel?
A: Yes, Opuntia basilaris var. caudata is a champion of independence and can easily survive a 10-day trip without any watering. Its drought tolerant nature makes it ideal for busy plant lovers or frequent travelers.

Q: How do I get Opuntia basilaris var. caudata to bloom?
A: Opuntia basilaris var. caudata needs a night temperature drop in late winter and early spring to trigger blooming. Moving it to a cooler spot in the evenings or leaving it outdoors in autumn helps set the stage for those stunning magenta flowers.

Q: Can I grow Opuntia basilaris var. caudata outdoors year-round?
A: Opuntia basilaris var. caudata grows outdoors year-round in USDA Zones 8b-11, covering states like California, Texas, Arizona, Florida, and Hawaii. In cooler zones it makes a spectacular patio plant for summer, just bring it in before hard frosts and shelter it from excess rain.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
