  •   Maverick Cuttings is a striking monstrose form of Opuntia, the iconic prickly pear cactus genus native to the Americas, where it thrives in arid, sun-drenched landscapes. This easy care cactus has earned a loyal following among collectors who love its unpredictable, sculptural growth and drought tolerant toughness.

Maverick Cuttings grows in an upright, clustering habit, producing flattened pads that twist and contort in gloriously irregular patterns typical of monstrose cactus forms. The blue-green pads are studded with spines and glochids, giving this full sun cactus a bold architectural presence that stands out in any collection. Its clustering growth style means each plant develops its own unique silhouette over time.

As a low maintenance cactus with deep Opuntia roots, Maverick Cuttings puts most of its energy into producing those fascinating pads rather than predictable seasonal displays. Worth noting: the sap and spines of Maverick Cuttings can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so handling with thick gloves is always a smart move.

Maverick Cuttings is a showstopper indoors on a sunny windowsill or outdoors on a summer patio, and it genuinely thrives when moved outside during warmer months for a dose of real direct sun. This rare cactus cutting is a collector favorite precisely because no two plants look alike, and its easy care nature makes it a brilliant starting point for anyone building a serious cactus collection. It tolerates dry heated air, handles the occasional drafty spot, and can survive a 10-day trip without a caretaker, making it one of the most forgiving architectural cacti available.

  •   Maverick Cuttings thrives in full, direct sun for at least 6 hours daily and needs rotating regularly to encourage even, balanced growth.

Water Maverick Cuttings deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter when growth slows.

Maverick Cuttings performs best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix that prevents moisture from sitting around the roots.

Maverick Cuttings prefers temperatures between 50-95°F (10-35°C) and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop near freezing.

Maverick Cuttings grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a diluted low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer applied once or twice during the active growing season.

Maverick Cuttings is best suited to USDA FAQs/ Common Issues Zones 9-11, where winter temperatures rarely dip below 20-25°F (-6 to -4°C), and it can be grown outdoors year-round across warm states including Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. Gardeners along the Oregon coast and in sheltered microclimates of New Mexico and Arkansas may also find success with Maverick Cuttings in protected spots. Outside these zones, it excels as a container plant that spends summers outdoors across states like Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and beyond before overwintering inside.
  • Q: Is Maverick Cuttings pet friendly?
A: This plant is pet friendly, though the spines and sap of Maverick Cuttings can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so keeping it on a high shelf out of reach is strongly recommended.

Q: How much light does Maverick Cuttings need?
A: Maverick Cuttings needs full, direct sun and does best in your brightest window or outdoors during summer. Rotate it regularly so every side receives even light exposure.

Q: How do I propagate Maverick Cuttings?
A: To propagate Maverick Cuttings, remove a healthy pad with gloves, let the cut end callous for several days, then place it in dry cactus mix and water sparingly until roots establish.

Q: Why are the pads on my Maverick Cuttings turning yellow?
A: Yellowing on Maverick Cuttings is most often caused by overwatering or insufficient light. Cut back watering, ensure the soil drains freely, and move the plant to a brighter spot.

Q: Can Maverick Cuttings go outside in summer?
A: Absolutely. Maverick Cuttings loves spending summer outdoors in a sunny spot, and the extra direct sun encourages strong, healthy pad growth. Bring it back inside before temperatures drop in autumn.

Q: How do I know when Maverick Cuttings is thirsty?
A: Maverick Cuttings will show slight wrinkling or softening of its pads when it needs water. This visible wilting is your reliable cue to give it a thorough, deep drink.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
