  •   Echinocactus grusonii, also called Golden Barrel Cactus, is a drought-tolerant cactus native to the rocky highlands of central Mexico. It grows slowly, adding just an inch or two per year, and is widely cultivated by collectors and gardeners for its distinctive golden-yellow spines.

It forms a bold upright globe covered in golden-yellow spines that radiate from geometric ribs running top to bottom. The dense spine clusters give the plant a warm, glowing appearance, and mature specimens develop a satisfying barrel shape. Over time, established plants can produce offsets at the base through their clumping growth habit, multiplying the visual impact.

Bright yellow flowers emerge near the crown during summer on mature plants, though blooms typically require a distinct drop in nighttime temperatures to develop. Moving an indoor plant outside for summer can trigger flowering. The plant also releases oxygen at night, making it suitable for bedroom placement.

Position this desert cactus on a high shelf or out of reach due to its sharp spines. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It handles dry indoor air and tolerates balcony conditions well, growing both as a potted houseplant and an outdoor specimen in appropriate climates.

  •   Golden Barrel Cactus - Echinocactus grusonii grows well in full, direct sun for at least six hours daily, though intense south-facing window glass can scorch it in summer.

Water it every two to three weeks during spring and summer, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to once a month or skip entirely.

Echinocactus grusonii does best in a fast-draining cactus mix blended with coarse perlite or pumice for excellent drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50–95°F and should be protected from freezing conditions below 25°F.

Echinocactus grusonii is a slow grower, typically adding just an inch or two per year, and benefits from balanced cactus fertilizer once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but preferring frost-free winters. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, with pockets in coastal Oregon and Washington also within these zones.
  • Q: How often should I water Golden Barrel Cactus - Echinocactus grusonii?
A: Every two to three weeks in spring and summer, letting soil dry completely between waterings. Reduce to once monthly or skip watering entirely in winter.

    Q: Are the spines dangerous?
A: Golden Barrel Cactus - Echinocactus grusonii has sharp spines that can cause skin and paw irritation, so keep it well out of reach of children and pets.

Q: How much light does Echinocactus grusonii need indoors?
A: Place it in your sunniest window for bright, direct sun. Rotate it periodically for even, symmetrical growth.

Q: Can it survive long periods without water?
A: Echinocactus grusonii easily handles being left alone for ten days or more without water.

Q: Does Golden Barrel Cactus grow quickly?
A: It grows slowly, adding just an inch or two per year and living for decades in the right conditions.

Q: Can I move it outside for the summer?
A: Yes. Position it in full sun outdoors, which can trigger blooming. Shield it from heavy rain and bring it inside before frost arrives.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
