  •   Echeveria runyonii Topsy Turvy is a blue-gray rosette succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the rocky hillsides of Nuevo León, Mexico. It belongs to the Echeveria genus, a group known worldwide for its sculptural rosettes and straightforward care requirements.

'Topsy Turvy' gets its name from its most recognizable feature: upward-curling, spoon-shaped leaves with a distinctive channeled groove running along the top surface, giving each leaf an inverted appearance. The foliage is blue-gray with a powdery farina coating, forming tight clustering rosettes that multiply as offsets emerge over time. Rosettes typically grow to about 6 to 8 inches wide as single plants before developing into attractive clusters.

In late summer to autumn, it produces arching flower stalks bearing coral-to-orange blooms when nighttime temperatures drop. Cooler evening conditions trigger flowering, producing vivid warm-colored flowers held above the silvery-blue rosettes.

Rotate 'Topsy Turvy' weekly to maintain a symmetrical rosette shape, as it naturally leans toward its light source over time. Keep it sheltered from rain to protect the powdery farina coating on the leaves. Move it outdoors during summer months to let it grow well in bright conditions, then bring it back inside before frost arrives. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Use it in windowsill displays, rock gardens, and mixed succulent arrangements. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

  •   Echeveria runyonii Topsy Turvy grows well in bright indirect light to full sun, ideally four to six hours daily; intense midday sun can scorch the farina coating.

Water it thoroughly every 10 to 14 days in summer and once every 3 to 4 weeks in winter, letting soil dry completely between waterings.

'Topsy Turvy' does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent soil mix blended with 30 to 50 percent perlite or coarse pumice.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 80°F and should be moved indoors before frost, as it is not frost tolerant.

'Topsy Turvy' is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a light balanced fertilizer once monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25°F with brief exposure only. It grows outdoors year-round across California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi, as well as along mild coastal stretches of Oregon and in warmer pockets of New Mexico, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Virginia.
  • Q: Is Echeveria runyonii Topsy Turvy pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: What window placement works best for indoor growth?
A: Echeveria runyonii Topsy Turvy grows well in a south- or west-facing window; north-facing windows provide insufficient light, while intense afternoon sun through south windows can bleach the farina, so sheer curtains help in hot climates.

Q: How large does 'Topsy Turvy' grow?
A: Single rosettes reach about 6 to 8 inches wide, and offsets gradually form clusters over time; it is available in 2-inch and 4-inch pot sizes.

Q: Can this plant be propagated easily?
A: 'Topsy Turvy' is propagated by removing offsets from the base or individual leaves, allowing cut ends to callous for a day or two, then placing them on well-draining soil.

Q: Does 'Topsy Turvy' need special care outdoors in summer?
A: Move it to a bright spot with protection from heavy rain, which damages the powdery coating; bring it inside before temperatures near freezing.

Q: What causes the rosette to look lopsided?
A: 'Topsy Turvy' leans toward its light source naturally, so rotating the pot a quarter turn weekly maintains an even, symmetrical shape.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
