  •   Crassula ovata 'Hummel's Sunset', also called Jade Plant, is a drought-tolerant succulent from the Crassulaceae family native to the arid regions of South Africa and Mozambique. This award-winning cultivar has become a collector favorite for its color-shifting foliage and resilience in indoor and outdoor settings.

Hummel's fleshy, rounded leaves glow with green centers edged in brilliant yellow and fiery red-orange, intensifying into deeper reds as sun exposure increases. It grows in an upright, tree-like form with thick woody stems that develop a bonsai-style appearance over time. The plant can reach 3 to 4 feet tall indoors, developing substantial root systems that require a heavy, stable pot to prevent tipping.

With proper cool nighttime temperatures during autumn and winter, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped pale pink to white flowers that carry a light, sweet fragrance.

Hummel works well as a tabletop specimen, windowsill accent, or patio plant during warmer months. It is toxic to cats and dogs, so place it on a high shelf or out-of-reach location away from pets and small children. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Leaf and stem cuttings root readily, making home propagation straightforward.

  •   Crassula ovata 'Hummel's Sunset' grows well in bright indirect light to partial sun, with full sun deepening the red tones in the foliage.

Water it deeply every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and once a month or less in winter, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings.

Hummel does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix combined with added perlite for extra drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 65 and 75°F and should be moved indoors before temperatures drop below 30°F.

Hummel is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from diluted balanced fertilizer applied once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating brief dips to around 25 to 30°F but performing best without frost. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Nevada. It also grows well in select microclimates along Oregon's coast, New Mexico, and parts of Arkansas and North Carolina that fall within zone 9 with light protection during cold snaps.
  • Q: How often should I water Crassula ovata 'Hummel's Sunset'?
A: Water deeply every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, then reduce frequency to once a month or less in winter. Check the soil by inserting your finger an inch down; water only when completely dry.

Q: Is it safe to keep around pets?
A: Crassula ovata 'Hummel's Sunset' is toxic to cats and dogs, and the sap can cause skin or paw irritation. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach.

Q: What light does Hummel need?
A: Bright indirect light maintains the green centers, while increasing direct sun intensifies the red and orange edges on the leaves. A south- or west-facing window provides optimal color development.

Q: How big does it get?
A: Hummel can reach 3 to 4 feet tall indoors over time, developing a tree-like structure with thick woody stems.

Q: Can Jade Plant be propagated?
A: Leaf and stem cuttings root readily. Allow cut ends to callous for a day or two before placing them in dry succulent soil.

Q: Can this plant survive a 10-day trip without watering?
A: Jade Plant can go up to ten days without water. Water thoroughly before leaving, and ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot upon your return.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
