    •   Opuntia salmiana, also called Prickly Pear Cactus, is a broad, flat-stemmed succulent native to central Mexico. It grows from segmented pads rather than a traditional stem, growing in hot, arid climates and well-suited to drought-tolerant landscapes and indoor collections alike.

The plant's most recognizable feature is its wide, flattened stems called cladodes, which are forest green and studded with small clusters of spines. It spreads horizontally and grows quite wide, developing an open, spreading form rather than a compact rosette. The pads are thick and waxy, built to store water and withstand intense sun exposure. It wilts slightly when the soil is dry.

Blooms appear in late spring through early summer, though flowering depends on adequate direct sun and consistent care. The fruit has been used in traditional cuisines across Mexico and the southwestern United States for generations. It grows slowly and needs occasional pruning to manage its spreading width, especially if space is limited.

It tolerates dry, heated indoor air without stress and requires cover from rain if grown indoors near windows or sheltered areas. Keep it on a high shelf or elevated surface out of reach of children and pets, as the spines pose a hazard.

    •   Opuntia salmiana grows well in direct sun and tolerates low-light conditions, though it flowers best with strong, unfiltered light.

Water it thoroughly when the soil is bone-dry, typically every 2-3 weeks during the growing season; reduce watering in winter.

Opuntia salmiana does best in well-draining cactus or succulent soil mixed with coarse sand or perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 50-80°F and handles dry heated air without stress or damage.

Opuntia salmiana is a slow grower that rarely needs fertilizing; apply diluted succulent fertilizer once in spring if desired.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and grows outdoors without frost protection in California, Arizona, southern Nevada, southern Utah, southern New Mexico, southern Texas, and Hawaii. It requires indoor winter protection in colder regions.

    • Q: How often should I water Opuntia salmiana?
A: Check the soil every few days; water only when it feels bone-dry throughout. In fall and winter, extend the interval to once monthly or less.

Q: Does this plant need direct sunlight to bloom?
A: Yes. Opuntia salmiana produces the most reliable flowering in late spring and early summer when exposed to strong, unfiltered direct sun.

Q: Can Opuntia salmiana survive a short trip without watering?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Q: Is this plant safe around cats and dogs?
A: No. The spines pose a physical hazard, and Opuntia salmiana's sap causes skin and paw irritation, so keep it out of their reach.

Q: How do I propagate Opuntia salmiana?
A: Detach a pad segment and let it dry for a few days before pressing it into dry cactus soil; it roots within weeks.

Q: Where can I grow this outdoors year-round?
A: Opuntia salmiana grows outdoors in USDA zones 9-11, which includes southern California, Arizona, southern Nevada, southern Utah, southern New Mexico, southern Texas, and Hawaii without frost protection.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
