Narrow, sword-shaped leaves grow in dense tufts at the tips of bare, woody canes, with each leaf edged in a thin burgundy-red margin along both sides. The canes can reach several feet tall over time, giving the plant a tree-like silhouette. Leaves are green through the center with the red border running the full length, and older lower leaves drop naturally as the plant matures, leaving the cane exposed beneath.
'Red Margined' rarely flowers indoors, so its appeal comes from the foliage and form rather than blooms. It filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, and studies have placed dracaena among the air-purifying plants that process indoor pollutants. Rotating the pot by a quarter turn every week or two keeps the leaf tufts growing evenly on all sides rather than leaning toward the light source.
You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it tolerates the dry, heated air common in centrally heated homes through winter. Move it outside in summer when temperatures are warm, then bring it back in before the first cool nights arrive. Keep it away from air conditioning and heating vents, as direct blasts of conditioned air cause the leaf tips to brown. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and a high shelf keeps it out of reach of both pets and small children.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry between waterings. It is sensitive to fluoride in tap water, so filtered or distilled water keeps the tips from browning.
'Red Margined' does best in a well-draining potting mix, such as a standard houseplant blend cut with perlite at roughly two parts soil to one part perlite. Good drainage at the root level is more important than soil richness.
It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should not be exposed to anything below 50°F. Cold drafts near windows in winter or direct airflow from AC units will cause leaf damage faster than low ambient temperature alone.
It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12, where frost is rare or absent and temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and southern Texas, as well as parts of Arizona and Louisiana with mild winters. In all cooler zones, it performs best as a container plant brought indoors once nighttime temperatures approach 50°F.
