This terrarium works beautifully as a centerpiece, office decoration, or thoughtful gift for plant lovers. Place the terrarium in a spot that receives at least four to six hours of bright, indirect light each day. A south- or east-facing windowsill is ideal. Avoid harsh midday direct sun through glass, which can concentrate heat and scorch the plants. If natural light is limited, a grow light positioned a few inches above the opening for eight to ten hours daily works well.
Water sparingly, roughly once every one to two weeks, allowing the sand and soil layer to dry out completely between waterings. Because the teardrop vessel has limited drainage, use a small watering can or squeeze bottle to deliver water directly at the base of each plant rather than flooding the container. Overwatering is the most common problem with terrariums, so when in doubt, wait an extra few days before watering again.
Succulents in this arrangement thrive at typical indoor temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Keep the terrarium away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units, as sudden temperature swings can stress the plants. The enclosed glass can retain warmth, so avoid placing it directly against a window on cold winter nights.
Feed the succulents once during the active growing season in spring or early summer using a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply it carefully at the soil level to avoid disturbing the white sand layer. A single feeding is generally sufficient for the compact scale of this arrangement, and over-fertilizing can lead to leggy, stretched growth.
