The Sputnik Urchin with Tillandsia Air Plant is a creative pairing of a dried sea urchin shell and a living Tillandsia, the genus that includes hundreds of air plant species native to the forests, mountains, and deserts of Central and South America. Tillandsias are epiphytes, meaning they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots, making soil entirely unnecessary. This combination is often called an air plant display or urchin air plant, and it makes a striking conversation piece for any home.
The Tillandsia nestled inside the spiky urchin shell typically features slender, arching leaves in silvery green to gray-green tones, with fine trichomes giving the surface a soft, dusty texture. The sea urchin casing adds a sculptural, geometric quality, its star-shaped form echoing the plant's own radiating growth habit. Together they create a compact, globe-like display that looks equally at home on a floating shelf, bookcase, or bathroom ledge, and pairs beautifully with driftwood, stone trays, or minimalist terrariums.
This display thrives in kitchens, bathrooms, offices, and living rooms where bright ambient light is available. Because it requires no soil or pot, it is one of the most versatile decorative plants available. This plant is pet friendly, making it a worry-free choice for homes with cats and dogs. To keep the delicate urchin shell intact, it is best placed out of reach of young children.
Tillandsia air plants prefer bright, indirect light for at least four to six hours a day. A spot near a south- or east-facing window works well. Avoid placing the urchin display in direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves, and keep it away from dark corners where insufficient light will cause slow growth and decline.
Water the air plant by removing it gently from the urchin shell and submerging it in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake off any excess water and allow the plant to dry completely before returning it to the shell, as standing moisture trapped inside the casing can cause rot at the base. In drier climates or heated indoor spaces, misting two to three times per week between soaks provides helpful supplemental humidity.
Tillandsias grow best in temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 32 degrees Celsius). They appreciate good air circulation, so avoid sealed terrariums or enclosed glass containers without ventilation. Keep the display away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units, all of which can dry out or chill the plant rapidly.
Feed the air plant once a month using a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength. Add it directly to the soaking water during the plant's regular weekly soak. Fertilizing encourages healthy foliage, more vibrant coloration, and can promote blooming in mature plants.
