Tillandsias earned the name "air plants" because they absorb water and nutrients directly through their leaves rather than roots, making them one of the most low-maintenance plant types available. Tillandsia leaves are narrow and slightly arching, covered in tiny silvery scales called trichomes that give the foliage a soft, frosted appearance. The plants themselves are compact, typically reaching two to four inches tall, and sit nestled inside the hollow white urchin shells, which measure roughly two to three inches in diameter. The contrast of the white shells against the silvery green foliage creates an eye-catching textural display. Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day, ideally within one to three feet of the glass. They can tolerate some direct morning sun but should be shielded from harsh afternoon rays, which can scorch their delicate leaves. Fluorescent or grow lights work well in spaces that lack natural light.
Water your air plants once or twice a week by misting them generously, or remove them from the shells and soak them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes every one to two weeks. After soaking, gently shake off any excess water and allow the plants to dry completely before returning them to the shells. Never let water pool inside the shell or sit at the base of the leaves, as this can cause rot. In drier climates or during winter heating season, increase misting frequency to keep the foliage hydrated.
Tillandsias are happiest in temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 32 degrees Celsius). They prefer moderate humidity and appreciate good air circulation, so avoid placing them in sealed terrariums or tight enclosed spaces. Keep them away from heating and air conditioning vents, which can dry them out quickly. Standard indoor home temperatures suit them well throughout the year.
Feed your Tillandsia air plants once a month using a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter strength, applied as a mist or added to the soaking water. Regular fertilizing encourages stronger growth, more vibrant color, and may prompt the plant to produce its signature bloom. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much fertilizer can damage the delicate leaves.
