This set pairs three Pink Urchin sea shells with Tillandsia air plants, a genus from the Bromeliaceae family native to forests, deserts, and mountains across Central and South America. Tillandsias are epiphytes, meaning they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots, making soil completely unnecessary. They are commonly called air plants for exactly this reason.
The Pink Urchin shells have a naturally spiky, sculptural silhouette with a soft rosy hue that adds warmth and texture to any display. Each Tillandsia nestles inside the shell, creating a compact, self-contained arrangement. The slender, arching leaves of the air plant contrast beautifully with the rounded, spined shell, making each piece feel like a miniature coastal sculpture. The set of three allows for varied groupings on shelves, windowsills, or tabletops.
These arrangements work beautifully as desk accents, bathroom decor, or a charming gift for plant lovers. Because they require no soil or pot, they fit into tight spaces where traditional plants cannot. Tillandsia air plants are considered pet friendly. As with any small decorative object, it is best to place them out of reach of young children.
Tillandsias thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day. Direct afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, so an east or north-facing windowsill is ideal indoors. Fluorescent or grow lights also work well if natural light is limited.
Water air plants by misting them thoroughly two to three times per week, or by removing them from the shell and soaking them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake off any excess water and allow them to dry completely before returning them to the urchin shell. Standing water inside the shell can damage the plant, so good drainage and airflow are essential.
Tillandsias prefer temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 32 degrees Celsius). They do best in average household humidity but appreciate occasional misting in very dry indoor environments. Keep them away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating units, which can dry them out quickly.
Feed your air plants once a month using a bromeliad or Tillandsia-specific fertilizer diluted to one quarter strength. Add it to your misting water or soaking water during a regular watering session. Fertilizing encourages healthy growth and can promote blooming, though it is not required for the plant to thrive.
