The Seascape Terrarium combines two beloved Tillandsia air plants, Tillandsia bulbosa (Guatemala) and Tillandsia ionantha, into a single curated coastal display. Both belong to the Bromeliaceae family and are native to warm, humid regions of Central America. Known simply as air plants, Tillandsias are among the most recognizable and rewarding houseplants available, requiring no soil to thrive.
Tillandsia bulbosa Guatemala features dramatic, tentacle-like leaves that curl and twist outward from a bulbous base, while Tillandsia ionantha forms a compact rosette of silvery-green leaves that blush vivid red and violet when approaching bloom. Both plants are displayed in a decorative terrarium styled with sand, shells, and sea glass to evoke a calm coastal seascape. The arrangement makes a natural centerpiece on a shelf, windowsill, or desk.
This terrarium makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves nature-inspired home decor, especially those new to keeping plants. Both Tillandsia varieties are pet friendly, making this display a worry-free addition to homes with cats or dogs. Both Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place the terrarium near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day. Avoid harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. Under artificial grow lights, these plants do equally well, making them ideal for office settings or rooms with limited natural light.
Water your Tillandsia air plants by removing them from the terrarium and misting thoroughly two to three times per week, or by soaking them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, shake off any excess water and allow the plants to dry completely upside down before returning them to the display. Standing water at the base of the leaves can cause rot.
Tillandsia air plants prefer temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) and appreciate moderate to high humidity. They are well suited to average indoor conditions but benefit from a gentle misting on dry days, particularly in heated or air-conditioned rooms. Keep the terrarium away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning units that can dry out the foliage rapidly.
Feed your air plants once or twice a month using a bromeliad or Tillandsia-specific fertilizer diluted to one quarter strength. Add the fertilizer to the soaking water or misting bottle for even absorption. Regular feeding encourages stronger growth and increases the likelihood of the plants producing their striking blooms and colorful foliage changes.
