The Pink Urchin with Tillandsia Air Plant is a charming duo that pairs a sea urchin shell with a living Tillandsia, a genus of bromeliads native to the forests, mountains, and deserts of Central and South America. Tillandsias are epiphytes by nature, meaning they draw moisture and nutrients from the air rather than from soil, making this arrangement as unique as it is effortless to maintain.
The Tillandsia sits nestled inside a pale pink sea urchin shell, creating a sculptural, ocean-inspired display. The plant itself features slender, arching silvery-green leaves covered in tiny trichomes that give them a soft, fuzzy appearance. Compact in size, this arrangement fits beautifully in a small decorative dish, on a windowsill, or grouped with other air plants for a curated botanical vignette.
This arrangement makes a thoughtful gift and an eye-catching accent for desks, bookshelves, bathrooms, and living spaces. Because no soil or pot is required, it suits even the smallest spaces. It is a great choice for households with pets and is best placed out of reach of young children to keep the delicate shell and plant intact.
Tillandsia thrives in bright, indirect light. Place it near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. A north- or east-facing windowsill, or a few feet back from a south- or west-facing window, works very well indoors.
Mist the plant thoroughly two to three times per week, or soak it in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, gently shake off any excess water and allow the plant to dry completely before returning it to the shell. Sitting in standing water causes rot, so good airflow during the drying period is important.
Tillandsia prefers temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C and 32°C) and does well in typical indoor humidity levels. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating ducts, which can dry the plant out faster than usual. Good air circulation helps the plant breathe and prevents moisture from collecting at its base.
Feed your Tillandsia once a month using a water-soluble bromeliad or air plant fertilizer mixed to one-quarter of the recommended strength. Apply it during your regular misting or soaking routine. Fertilizing encourages healthy growth and may promote blooming, though it is not required for the plant to thrive.
