Tillandsia bulbosa, commonly known as the Bulbosa Air Plant, is a member of the Bromeliad family native to Central America, Mexico, and parts of South America. It belongs to the genus Tillandsia, the largest group of air plants (tillandsia), and has earned a following among plant lovers for its otherworldly, sculptural form. This particular arrangement pairs the plant with a seafan and a flat-bottom terrarium, creating a ready-to-display piece right out of the box.
The Bulbosa features a swollen, bulb-like base with long, tendril-like leaves that twist and curl dramatically upward. Its coloring ranges from deep green to purple-tinged tips, often flushing reddish-pink when the plant is about to bloom. Mature plants typically reach 4 to 7 inches in height. The flat-bottom terrarium housing this arrangement keeps it stable on any surface while the hanging design lets it double as a suspended display, making it a versatile decorative accent for shelves, desks, or windowsills.

Tillandsia bulbosa thrives in bright, indirect light. A spot near an east or west-facing window is ideal, providing several hours of gentle sunlight without the intensity that can scorch its delicate leaves. It tolerates lower light better than most air plants, but growth and blooming are noticeably more vigorous with consistent bright indirect exposure. Avoid placing it in direct afternoon sun for extended periods.
Water your Tillandsia air plant by misting it thoroughly 2 to 3 times per week, or by soaking it in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After watering, gently shake off excess water and allow it to dry completely within 4 hours, preferably upside down, to prevent moisture from collecting in the bulbous base. Good airflow after watering is essential for keeping the plant healthy and preventing rot.
Tillandsia bulbosa prefers temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) and does best in average indoor humidity levels of 40 to 60 percent. It appreciates good air circulation, so avoid sealed enclosures with no ventilation. In dry climates or air-conditioned spaces, increase misting frequency to compensate for lower humidity. Keep it away from cold drafts, heating vents, and air conditioning units that can dry it out quickly.
Fertilizing is optional but encourages faster growth and more vibrant blooms. Use a bromeliad or tillandsia-specific fertilizer diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength, and apply it once a month by misting the leaves directly. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can damage the plant's delicate trichomes and reduce its ability to absorb water efficiently.
