The Green Urchin with Assorted Tillandsia Air Plant is a charming duo that pairs a real sea urchin shell with a living Tillandsia, a member of the Bromeliaceae family native to the forests, mountains, and deserts of Central and South America. Tillandsias are epiphytes, meaning they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots, making soil completely unnecessary. This combination is popular as a decorative keepsake and a genuine, easy-care living plant.
The Tillandsia nestles naturally inside the spiky, textured green sea urchin shell, creating a sculptural, ocean-inspired accent piece. Depending on the assorted variety included, leaves may be silvery green, gray, or soft green, with a rosette or arching form. The sea urchin shell measures roughly 2 to 3 inches across, keeping the overall display compact and ideal for shelves, desks, windowsills, and terrariums.
This air plant set is a wonderful choice for anyone who loves low-maintenance greenery with a coastal or bohemian aesthetic. It works beautifully as a desk accent, bathroom display, or thoughtful gift. This plant is pet friendly, making it a worry-free addition to homes with animals. Tillandsias thrive in bright, indirect light. Place the plant near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day. An east or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid prolonged direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves, but also avoid dim corners with little to no natural light.
Water by misting the leaves two to three times per week, or by removing the plant from the urchin shell and soaking it in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, gently shake off any excess water and allow the plant to dry completely before placing it back in the shell. Standing water trapped at the base can cause rot, so good air circulation after watering is essential.
Tillandsias prefer temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) and do well in the typical range found in most homes. They appreciate some humidity, making kitchens and bathrooms with good natural light excellent spots. Keep the plant away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heating sources that can dry out the leaves quickly.
Feeding is optional but encourages healthier growth and can promote blooming. Use a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength, and add it to your misting or soaking water once a month during spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much concentration can damage the leaves.
