This collection pairs three live Tillandsia air plants with three uniquely shaped sea urchin shells, creating a ready-to-display set that blends the natural world of the ocean and the desert. Tillandsias belong to the Bromeliad family and are native to forests, deserts, and mountains across Central and South America. Because they absorb moisture and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots, no soil is ever required, making them one of the most effortless plants available for any home.
Each Tillandsia features slender, arching leaves covered in fine silvery trichomes that give the foliage a soft, textured appearance ranging from pale green to silvery grey. The plants sit nestled inside natural sea urchin shells, whose spiky, sculptural forms act as organic vessels that hold the plants upright without any need for potting or adhesive. Each shell in the set is one of a kind in shape and pattern, so the trio brings a collected, curated feel to any surface arrangement.
This set works beautifully on shelves, windowsills, coffee tables, and office desks, and it makes a thoughtful, creative gift. Tillandsia air plants are pet friendly, so you can place them freely around cats and dogs. Because the urchin shells are small and the plants tuck inside them, it is a good idea to place the set out of reach of young children to keep the delicate shells safe and intact.
Tillandsias thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day, such as a few feet back from a south- or east-facing window. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and dry the plant out too quickly indoors.
Mist the plants two to three times per week, making sure to wet all the leaves thoroughly. Alternatively, remove the plants from their shells and soak them in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes every one to two weeks, then shake off excess water and allow them to dry fully before placing them back in the urchins. Good airflow after watering prevents moisture from sitting at the base of the leaves.
Tillandsias prefer temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit and do best in normal household conditions. They appreciate some humidity, so bathrooms and kitchens with natural light are excellent spots. Keep them away from air conditioning vents and heating ducts, which create dry air that can stress the leaves over time.
Feed your Tillandsias once a month using a bromeliad or air plant fertilizer diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength. Add it to your misting water or soaking water during a regular watering session. Consistent but light feeding encourages healthy growth and can promote blooming in mature plants.
